Huge subs at an unbelievably reasonable price! I got a large steak and cheese with extra cheese and it was only $11. In the picture you will see 2 halves that I reheated in the oven when I got home. This is one large sub! Unlike some places where you ask for extra cheese and you’re wondering where the heck it is this was very cheesy. My wife has never ordered a chicken salad in all the years we’ve been together. Our... View all feedback.
What Nadine Kantic doesn't like about Al's State Street Cafe:
Al's......THANK YOU!!!!!! I walked over today from my work, and I was hoping and praying the chicken salad recipe had not changed in the last 15 years. Al's chicken salad was my absolute favorite sub of all time, and I would always get it when I was working as a deckhand for Boston Harbor Cruises. I am SO thrilled to say, it is as delicious as I remembered!!! I love that they don't put celery/raw onions into the mix.... View all feedback.
I've been visiting Al's since 2015, and it has consistently provided delicious food, swift service, and excellent value. In my opinion, their bag lunch is likely the best lunch deal in downtown.
The sandwiches here are outstanding—quick, tasty, and ideal for an office lunch. The environment is typical of a fast-paced setting: you step up, place your order, grab your sandwich, pay, and you're on your way. They keep the line moving swiftly. It’s takeout only with limited seating, which isn’t very practical during busy hours. A small 10-inch sandwich is more than enough, especially with the bag lunch option that includes chips and a drink for just $1.50. You definitely get a lot of food, and it’s quite filling.
This is the best tuna sub I've ever had! The bread is fresh, the tuna is perfectly mixed, and all the toppings are fantastic. The prices are great as well! The atmosphere is wonderful, and the staff is friendly and welcoming. There's always a good vibe here!
Legendary place that is hands down the best sub shop in Boston.

I am SO thrilled to say, it is as delicious as I remembered!!! I love that they don't put celery/raw onions into the mix. It is perfect as it comes, and I had lettuce and tomato onto my roll. The bread is fresh, and the regular/small size is huge! Thank you to all of you for your consistency in flavor, ability to manage a crowd (although I fortunately got right in today, arriving on the earlier side), and your team's welcoming attitudes. Al's still is and always with be the GOAT!!
