Superbly elegant, Cafe Opera in Bordeaux, has ambience aplenty ~ with its impressive chandeliers, its domed ceilings, its stately pillars ~ reminiscent of what I would imagine La Belle Epoque to be. The posh surroundings within this restaurant added to my high expectations of the food about to be served. And I was thoroughly delighted by the artistic presentation of each dish served us. What Monique Bourgeois dislikes about Cafe Opera:
Right in the centre of town at the Place de la Comedie where the Opera House is. The cafe looks great at night, with its high ceilings, chandeliers and beautiful outlook. We thought this was a great place to have drinks before dinner but it did not look as promising for dining. I think there are plenty of better dining options in Bordeaux. We had tickets to the Opera, and hoped to dine here beforehand. Helas, they don't open until apparently pre-theatre dining is not done in Bordeaux, here or at other restaurants. The maître d' or bartender snottily said they were full for later that evening....Too bad for his attitude; we had two more nights in Bordeaux when we might have gone there.
This place is a safe place to go if you enjoy the convenience of eating centrally. The food was very good, but the service could have been a bit more attentive.
I was fortunate to be invited by InterContinental Hotels Group for an amazing dinner at the Grand Theatre just opposite the InterContinental who provided the food for the occasion. As we walked into the theatre we were welcomed by a number of greeters' in period...customes. As you would expect from one of the world's top hotel group the evening was a treat, the food to die for and the Cheval Blanc and the Chateau D'Yquem normally only to dream about. A superb venue, service, food and wine. Unforgettable.

It's a pity that in such a brilliant and historic place it is impossible to find quality also in service and food.
