Description

In Lake Macquarie, diners encounter a wide spectrum of experiences when it comes to Chinese cuisine. While some patrons lament bland flavors and long wait times, complaining that meals are overpriced and portion sizes inadequate, others praise the charm of family-owned establishments serving traditional dishes that evoke nostalgia. Many rave about the exceptional satay chicken, and friendly service enhances the dining experience. Despite some inconsistencies, including chewy meats and off-flavor profiles, customers remain hopeful, drawn by a few hidden gems offering delightful food at reasonable prices. Ultimately, the quest for great Chinese food here continues.

This Classic Chinese Restaurant with low prices is a hidden gem. This restaurant is an institution. It has been there for around 40 years and is part of local history. And the food is excellent. I just had the satay beef/steak for lunch with fried rice for ten bucks (though night prices are more and they also have around 10 meal choices for a $9 lunch), and it was the best satay I have had for years. I split the meal as it was a big serving. The food is always delicious. Once I phoned and asked for a dish they did not have on the menu and they very kindly made it for me anyway. If you like the traditional Chinese restaurants with laminex topped tables that once covered Australia and showed us there is more to dinner than meat and three veg, then this is the place for you. It is at restaurants like this that we discovered and learned to love foreign food. Service: Take out Meal type: Lunch Price per person: A$1–20

I recently ordered from this takeout for the first time, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. We found the wait time to be quite long, and the meals didn’t live up to expectations. The Chicken Chow Mein was overly salty, while the Sweet and Sour Pork was chewy and nearly inedible. The Honey Chicken was somewhat acceptable, but nothing to rave about. The special fried rice was sticky and came out as a single lump. The combination omelet was decent, but overall, for $72, I wouldn’t recommend the dishes we tried. Food: 2/5, Service: 2/5, Atmosphere: 2/5.
