Forced to wait for the next bus to the Picos de Europa we had no other option than to spend more time in lovely Bilbao. Lugging our suitcases into the Plaza Nue... read more Forced to wait for the next bus to the Picos de Europa we had no other option than to spend more time in lovely Bilbao. Lugging our suitcases into the Plaza Nueva of the Casca Viejo we looked for somewhere that might accommodate a coeliac for lunch. Two things stand out in Spain for me: they are generally outstanding in their awareness of gluten free requirements and secondly their kindness and wilingness to try to accommodate those needs. Even though we ended up with three staff looking at the menu my typed Spanish translation of what ingredients were to be excluded helped us through their lack of English and our lack of Spanish. I was advised of three tapas plates that they were confident fitted the bill and I chose the skewers of grilled prawns in garlic and the potatoes. My husband and daughter wanted a paella and the staff indicated happily that it was ok for me too. Well fed and enjoying the beautiful architecture and the life in the square we passed the hours before departure. Many thanks for their efforts.

It also saved our skin by being the last place open on a Monday night when our siesta lasted a little too long... We had pizza which was fine, served on a hotplate which was a nice touch. We also had two raciones beautiful meaty prawns in a garlicy sauce and mussels in a tomato sauce. We also had some lovely juicy olives! Reasonably priced and good service in a prime location.

Fast and kind service, good coffee and tee. We were here just for a quick stop but everything was good and the service was really quick.
