This apparently was on old salt store and you walk down into a lovely huge room with stone walls, lovely lighting and chunky wooden tables creating a wonderful ambience. Unfortunately there it ends. We were sat down and QR codes on paper place mats give you the menu at which point I wanted to leave but my daughter wanted to persevere. We were totally ignored for about ten minutes and finally a surly fellow came to take our food order not to offer us drinks nor water nor bread. We had passed a week in Spain and I had conversed with many waiters etc in Spanish but her they insisted on speaking to us in English which I found rude. Food was nothing special and the service spoilt the whole evening
I chose this restaurant as it is in the Michelin guide. I speak Spanish so went in and spoke to the staff who insisted on speaking English back to me with, what I can only call a bad attitude. For an upscale restaurant, there were no menus only a QR code on a paper placemat, which was fine for me but not my 80 year old father who’s technological skills are limited. It also means people sit there staring at their phones which I personally hate. We weren’t told the specials. Offered no bread. No aperitif. After 20 minutes of waiting for a drinks order or being offered water we ordered wine and a cocktail. The wine was slammed on the table and not allowed to breathe even though it was an expensive Ribeira. The waiter was incredibly rude when I asked for another cocktail. He took my existing one away (which I was quite happy with, I just wanted to try another! Which I said to him in Spanish) he then glared at me and muttered something. So much for service with a smile. The food was ok but nothing to rave about. There are soooo many good restaurants in Bilbao, give this one a miss. Conclusion food average. Service appalling. They also seemed very disappointed with a 30% tip. I wouldn’t have given them one but my dad insisted and they’d didn’t even bother to thank us or even give us a smile.
We were a group of 4 friends and we really enjoyed the food at Bascook. The reason for our poor rating is that the waiter was extremley rude. We don't speak Spanish and he gave us no guidance on the menu, his mobile phone rang 3 times while taking our order and he did'nt apologise. He made no effort to engage with us and was gruff and rude throughout the evening. Our bill came to €217 euro and as we would always tip we put €240 on the plate expecting him to return the 23€ for us to leave him and he brought the tin back and there was only €3 in it which he shook at us to see if we'd leave him that too. to be honest at that stage if we would have taken all the tip back if we would have. We looked around for someone to complain to when we were leaving but could'nt find anyone. The restaurant subsequently sent us an email to review our meal ..We left a an unfavourable review and never heard back from them!!
We went twice, the food was so good. The service was excellent and the meal good value. We would highly recommend for an experience of authentic local cooking.
Very nice restaurant and welcoming staff. We had a dinner there and we were very satisfied. Cocktail, appetizer and main dish. Dessert, coffee and digestif drink. All very good. At the end of the dinner we were happy and full. The restaurant is located in a very nice area, so you can take a nice walk around after dinner
