I will be the first to admit my 20 month old niece Ellie can be a challenge at times. However, on our visit to the Van Xuan Vietnamese restaurant this evening she was a pleasure to be with, laughing and being very well behaved. After approximately 20 minutes, and amid the sounds of a barking dog at a nearby table, we were approached by the owner/manager who requested that 'it would be nice if we could be more careful with the child, and keep her noise to a minimum'. Our initial reaction was shock and bewilderment that a dog can be welcomed into the restaurant and be allowed to bark, but a child of a customer was being asked to be kept quiet, particularly, given upon our arrival, we were invited to a table at the rear of the restaurant by the owner/manager after we had specifically asked for a table for seven adults and a baby. In the vicinity there are a multitude of restaurants, and had we been informed that there were no tables available, we would have happily moved on and given our business to somewhere more tolerant and accepting of our younger members of society. After approximately 15 minutes of contemplation we approached the owner/manager to discuss the issue and whilst being repeatedly advised that he had no problem with children we were informed that, 'In Germany we do things differently, and children are kept quiet', which confirmed our decision not to have dessert or any further drinks and leave as soon as possible. Hugely ironic, given that 5 members of our group actually live in Germany and have never been treated with such contempt. My evening at this restaurant was sealed when prior to leaving I entered the bathroom to be confronted with a male washing his bald head in the hand basin, while desperately (and repeatedly) trying to hack up a phlegm ball from the back of his throat and being told in an aggressive manner to wait when I attempted to wash my hands as he dried his scalp and wiped his sweaty face with paper towel.Overall, a restaurant I would describe on par with Fawlty Towers, and while the food was good (and I make this statement within 8 hours of eating), it is most certainly not child friendly, and a German cultural experience which I hope does not represent Berlin as a whole.
This is a sredni of the larges, not a pretense of the reauration in the schonberg, the hall of a glowing hauptstrasse street. The typical wietnamska, with a dispute of menu, in the lunch of the price of the nizzle of 2 euros in the evening. The place is popular, in the case of the day. In cold weather, well frozen. The eyes must be oric Asian tastes, but they were so charming. The surrender of the docks quickly, the luga is not nachalna. As a result of the 8.5 euro, it is a solid ash, added to the mozna of a yielonosci, kielkow, kolendry, domaczyc, bo ostra is not. This is a rosol with free platoons and a ballroom with meat and meat. smaczny i pozywny (choc nie na calydzien, z pewnonia).
