John Long’s Fish Chips - Belfast
John Long’s Fish Chips
Description
Just a few steps away from the stunning Opera House lies one of Belfast’s hidden treasures, John Long’s, the longest established fish and chip shop in the city. Recognized as one of Belfast’s top seven wonders alongside landmarks like the Europa Hotel, Linen Hall Library, and the Crown Liquor Saloon, John Long’s has become a cherished spot for both locals and visitors alike. For a century, the people of Belfast have celebrated their love for fish suppers at John Long's. Here, you'll discover a combination of great food, value, and a vibrant atmosphere—everything you need for a memorable meal. We take immense pride in crafting what we believe to be the best fish suppers not just in Belfast, but in the whole country. Our secret? Fresh fish, light and crispy batter, Maris Piper potatoes, and our renowned homemade pasties. It’s good food, and plenty of it! Honoring the NI Year of Food and Drink in 2016, we introduced gluten-free options, including delicious chili cod, lemon haddock, and natural smoked hake, ensuring there's something for everyone to savor. While Long's may have been a local secret, word has certainly spread! We've had some notable visitors drop by for a supper, including Brendan Fraser, Sean Bean, and the lads from Take That. Even Eamon Holmes declared that if he had just a couple of days to live, he'd spend it with us at Long’s—now that's a compliment! Comedian and television presenter Dara Ó Briain has also paid us a visit to sample our acclaimed fish supper. So why not come and experience Long's for yourself? Nestled close to the Europa Hotel on Athol Street, we would love to welcome you to Belfast's oldest chipper. As Joris Minne from the Belfast Telegraph puts it, “The quality of John Long’s is exceptional and unmatched…”.

Please stop buying in your vacuum packed chips. The reason why we all love Longs is because of the fish and homemade chips. I used to own a chip shop and I peeled and chipped my own. Ive been going to Longs for years. The next time Ill just get a fish.
We have visited this place several times recently. It used to be great but is seriously down hill these days. The last time we had fish, it was at least half batter. This time we had chips and battered sausage , avoiding the fish. We got two plates of chips. On both plates you could not eat two thirds of the chips. They were all just hard, crispy bits that looked like leftover chips. The sausage batter was greasy and soft so we peeled it off. We also had a curry sauce to dip. It was cold. We left most of the hard chips and nearly all off the curry sauce. We will not be recommending this place to anyone.
Got take away fish and chips. Beautifully cooked haddock in light, crispy batter and perfect chips. Reasonably priced too.
If you’re in Belfast City Centre and fancy fish chips, this is probably the best you can get. Lockdown couldn’t stop a delicious takeaway on Thursday night and even when I got it back to the office, still crispy. Quality of fish is excellent.
