Millstone Hill - Barre
Millstone Hill
Description
Perched with sweeping views of Mt. Mansfield and the Green Mountains, this converted-barn lodge charms with soaring beams, cozy common rooms, homemade breakfasts and attentive hosts—an inviting base for weddings, hikes and a slow-paced Vermont escape. However, guests report inconsistent cleanliness, musty linens, shared bathrooms, limited privacy, minimal in-room amenities (no TVs) and rustic maintenance issues; it rewards those seeking character, vistas and DIY event flexibility but may disappoint travelers wanting spotless, modern, full-service accommodations.
Feedback
We encountered dead flies and damp, musty bedding during our stay. At 4:30 PM, we were asked to be quiet because another room was asleep, which made us feel uncomfortable. The lack of privacy was an issue, and there were no TVs, games, or any form of entertainment available. We didn't receive a warm welcome, and there was no introduction or explanation provided upon arrival. This place might be suitable only if you’re renting the entire lodge or if you're simply looking for a place to sleep, read, or write, without minding the absence of a TV and shared bathrooms with strangers.
The place was filthy, so we decided not to stay. You were right about TY; she left because it felt uncomfortable and unclean. And Pierre, nobody wants to sleep in your room or your bed. We ended up driving three hours home in pouring rain, losing a day and a half of our vacation because everywhere else was booked. Seriously, just clean the place up. Get rid of the dirty carpets, fix the missing flagstone on the stairs, and tidy up around the barn—there's rusty junk everywhere. It feels more like a rundown setup than a charming antique experience; it's just old and creepy!
We hosted the rehearsal dinner near the lodge, held our ceremony outdoors under the shade of apple trees with breathtaking mountain views, enjoyed cocktail hour in the gardens surrounding the barn, and celebrated with dinner and dancing in the celebration barn. We capped off the night with a delightful bonfire. This venue may not suit everyone, but it was everything we envisioned and more. If you're looking for a large, pristine, cookie-cutter wedding with every detail planned out for you, this likely isn’t the right choice. Millstone Hill has a homemade, hardworking charm about it. While you’ll need to hire all your own vendors, this allows you the flexibility to design a truly unique wedding. Frankie and Pierre were consistently helpful, communicative, and accommodating throughout the entire process. It’s evident that they take immense pride in caring for and sharing their beloved childhood home.
The location is both intriguing and picturesque. The accommodations are incredibly relaxed, and the owners are truly wonderful people. I absolutely love the continental breakfast, which includes fresh fruit and some of the best homemade muffins in the world—so delicious! Whenever I travel in the area, I always make it a point to stay here, as it serves as a great central hub for anyone visiting Vermont.
We received a high recommendation for this place, and it certainly lived up to its reputation in every aspect. The views are stunning, the hospitality is warm, and the room is cozy with quality linens. The breakfast was excellent and plentiful. The barn has been beautifully renovated with handcrafted beams. Just outside, there are miles of lovely hiking and biking trails that wind through old quarries and granite piles, featuring large hills made of unused granite slabs. We will definitely return!
