Island Gate - Bantry
Island Gate
Description
Nestled off the beaten path, this Cork restaurant is a nostalgic gem, known for its hearty carvery and attentive staff. While recent visits revealed a charming yet dated decor, the quality of the food received mixed reviews. Diners praised the genuine warmth of the service, especially during busy lunch hours. However, some dishes fell short of expectations, with complaints about overcooked items and lack of freshness. Despite these setbacks, the warm atmosphere and ample parking make it a convenient stop for families. With a little reinvigoration, this eatery could reclaim its status as a beloved local classic.

First time I have been asked to leave a review by a staff member, and you know what, I love the confidence. Food is incredible, with this place being so popular, you are always getting the freshest possible ingredients as they sell so fast and they need to keep topping up. Everything from the rice to the lime juice, prepared in store. Staff are extremely friendly and well trained, sometimes I even wonder if they are trained in conversation with customers as I always seem to walk away from the till with a smile on my face. I have also noticed that they change gloves between each customer, which proves the level of cleanliness and quality within the kitchen. I have experienced the burritos from each staff member and I have to say, the consistency is unbelievable. Either the manager has hit the jackpot with staff or learned how to correctly manage people a very rare skill these days . Great job guys I have been blown away, see you tomorrow!
Really nice food, quality of meats is good. The prices are insane however, 13€ plus for regular, they add 1.9€ for a spoon of avocado lol Kind of hard to order as they do not name their ingredients and you need to ask the staff for guidance during ordering, with loud music in the background local spar shop, not this restaurants fault). Overall nice food but prices are incredibly high, would want to be on a six figure salary to eat here
We both ordered the €16.95 fresh haddock with tempura batter, mushy peas, and home-cut chips, as described on the menu. Unfortunately, what we received was far from what we expected. The fish was overcooked and coated in a heavy, stodgy batter. The peas tasted like they came straight from a can, and the chips were overcooked frozen fries. When I asked the waitress for a side of vegetables instead of the processed peas, she brought them, but they were soggy and lacked any flavor. When the waiter asked if we enjoyed our meal, I honestly said it was disappointing. Despite this, we were charged the full price. I’ve had better fish and chips from chip shops, and sadly, we both felt sick after eating here. This pub restaurant used to serve good food, but unfortunately, that is no longer the case.
