For our 2nd anniversary, I surprised my wife with dinner at Ammoora on a Saturday night. We parked on the hill next to the VAM. I had hoped to reserve the courtyard but with less than a week’s notice, we could only book the dining room—lesson learned for next time! The interior was stunning, with beautiful attention to detail. The owner warmly welcomed us and kindly moved us to a table by the fountain when we asked, which made the evening feel even more special. We began with drinks—my wife had a passion fruit and tequila cocktail called Wild Wild West, which she loved (a bit sweet for me). I tried Arak for the first time, served chilled over ice. Our waiter even showed us how to mix it with water, turning the anise-flavored liquor a milky white. For those unfamiliar, it tastes somewhat like Jägermeister. For starters, we shared the Beyti Sujuk Rolls and the Octopus. Both dishes were excellent, particularly the rolls—ground beef wrapped in crispy lavash, topped with yogurt and pistachio—a unique and delicious combination I hadn’t tried before. For our main course, we shared the short rib freekeh, which was moist and flavorful, almost like a risotto. The short rib was tender and melted in our mouths, complemented perfectly by a rich sauce. Still hungry, we also shared the lamb chops with couscous. The lamb was cooked rare as requested, and the couscous was perfectly salty and satisfying. To finish, we enjoyed madlouka—a creamy pistachio dessert served in a cocktail glass. The owner stopped by again to congratulate us on our anniversary and generously offered us complimentary champagne to end the night. The hospitality and service here were truly exceptional—10 out of 10. If I had to offer one critique, it’s that because Ammoora is very popular on a Saturday night, many tables in the dining room felt a bit lively rather than quiet and intimate, which slightly impacted the romantic atmosphere—but it didn’t take away from the fun. Overall, it was a wonderful setting for our anniversary, and I have no regrets.
