Reviews - Bernard's
Reviews summary
This family-run Baker eatery delivers genuine Southern comfort—creamy mac and cheese, standout peach cobbler and pralines—served cafeteria-style in a cozy, homey setting. Friendly staff and generous dessert options keep locals and families coming back, though service can be slow, portions feel small for the price, and some dishes arrive warm rather than hot. Occasional early kitchen closures and canned-style sides have been noted, but overall clean, soulful cooking and unlimited coffee refills make it a charming hometown destination near the zoo and Greenwood Park.

Bernards' Pralines are undoubtedly the best reason to put an end to making pralines at home. They are absolutely delicious! I can't fathom how they could be improved—they have perfected the recipe, preparation, and shipping; everything is just right! This is one purchase you'll never regret, whether it's a gift or a treat for yourself. I haven't had the chance to try their lunches yet, but I can't imagine they wouldn... View all feedback.
What James L dislikes about Bernard's:
I ate here on 9-17 -2016 and it was just okay. My plate consisted of what may have been the smallest turkey wing I have ever seen in my life. White beans and rice steamed broccoli and salad. The best-tasting items on the plate were the white beans and rice and the steam broccoli. The turkey wing again was small, dry and flavorless. The service was okay , as for the price I was willing to pay for it so it was okay. I... View all feedback.

Purchased meatball and spaghetti special. The meatballs were seasoned well but the sauce was tasteless and unseasoned. The sides of lima and green beans were straight from the can.
Wanted a burger, it said that they were open until 7:30 ...... they stopped answering the phone at 7:00 when I made it there at 7:15 they said the kitchen was closed . It'll be a long time before I go back, if I go back !!

I had to endure almost an hour of waiting for something that should take just a few minutes to prepare. The staff demonstrated a lack of professionalism and seemed indifferent to anyone who wasn’t a regular customer. I decided against asking for a refund only because I had promised to bring a snow cone for someone else and didn’t know of another shop nearby. It shouldn’t take long to scoop ice and add some flavoring. If they can’t provide basic customer service, perhaps they should reconsider operating from a physical location instead of a van. I will never support this establishment again, and whenever someone asks for snow cone recommendations in the summer, I make it a point to advise them against visiting the one in Baker next to the laundromat.

I ate here yesterday for the second time in two weeks. Once again, I 'm floored by the customer service, the quality of food, and just the overall 'deliciousness ' of the food. All together, we tried the fried catfish, crawfish etoufee, broccoli casserole, red beans, cabbage, green beans, cornbread, and turkey wings. The only items that were not as good were the cabbage and green beans but everything else, VERY tasty-seasoned well, and cooked perfect. Anyway, if you 're looking for some good ole Louisiana cooking/southern comfort food, this is the place you want to go. I will be returning. Tea cakes were pretty good- a little too much lemon in it for me but otherwise the right sweetness, and softness expected in a tea cake. What I liked most-consistency in the quality and taste. And this review is not just coming from me, but from my brother and mom who have both eaten there at least twice.
This review is only on the sweet stuff!! I can't tell you about the food but what I can tell you is the Pecan Candy!!! Is Awesome!!! There is 1 grocery store in Sherwood I remember who sells it but I was only in town for a short visit and wasnt close to that location or sure they had any in but was too excited to realize how close this Bernard's was to the church we would be attending for service they would be opened!!! Yes!!! Dozens and pounds of candy for our trip back home, I should become an out of state distributor I'm sure this would be a win,win for myself and Bernard's bcz these buttery, creamy, perfectly sweetened pecan filled piece are Awesome!!!
I recently moved back to baker and I have been dying to get to this place since they moved from out of the mall. I must say that I'm proud to see a black business doing well. I love their peach cobbler it is to die for and their Mac and cheese is very good to, nice and creamy . I tried their fish for the first time and it was ok. And I also tried their etoufee as well it was pretty god as well, however i didn't like how slow the service was, I was nervous my food would get could just sitting there waiting. I also am a little weirded out about Buffett setting which is how this place is set up. Over all I will be going back here especially for the Mac and cheese and peach cobbler. I also didn't like how I had to pay 13$ for my plate they are on the expensive side.
Friendly service and plenty of options. Food wasn't bad but didn't leave me wanting more. The bathroom was mostly clean. Dirt marks on toilet seat and most of the lights were out.

Bernards' Pralines are undoubtedly the best reason to put an end to making pralines at home. They are absolutely delicious! This is one purchase you'll never regret, whether it's a gift or a treat for yourself. I haven't had the chance to try their lunches yet, but I can't imagine they wouldn't be just as fantastic if they put even half the care into cooking as they do with the pralines. Kudos to the Bernard family! They truly represent Louisiana with pride!
Can someone please share your new location? I stopped by your old place, but you weren't there.
The seafood gumbo and fried fish at this restaurant are the best I've ever tasted. I was too stuffed to try the pralines, but I made sure to take some to enjoy later!
