as cubana this is authentic as it comes. I visited the other Cuban restaurants in austin and they were not very good. not authentic. this place brought me back to my roots and I could taste for home. the chef is a Cuban cook and you can say it. if you want real Cuban cuisine, that's the place. What Viviana Kfir doesn't like about Tropicana Cuban:
I grew up in Miami and know and love Cuban food. This is not true Cuban food. The food is good but in no way has the Cuban seasoning. There is no taste of mojito nor of sour orange which are typical of the Cuban gastronomy. There is no taste of sweet bread and black beans. The food is palatable and a mix of Mexican with Cuban, But mostly Mexican. The food still good but we were hoping it was Cuban. View all feedback.
Came across this hole-in-the-wall restaurant one night when I was craving Cuban food and it hit the spot! I always try the Cubano whenever I see it on the menu. The bread was nice and crispy and the inside was to be expected from any Cubano. Bonus points to our waitress who brought over a spicy sauce, a non-spicy sauce, and a garlic sauce and told me to mix it all together and add it to the Cubano. Definitely upped the flavor! Tangy with a bit of a kick. The ropa vieja is a shredded beef cooked in a tomato sauce. I ordered it with a side of congris. While it was very hearty, it was lacking in flavor for me. There were pork skin bits in the congris, but they were overcooked leading to them being chewy and an almost black color. I had yuca frita as an additional side as recommended by the waitress and it was delicious. The sauce it came in was citrus-forward and perfect for my palate. I also tried the lechon asado and highly recommend it. The meat was was tender and moist and you can't go wrong with the fried plantains as a side.
I've eaten at this place a good amount and they never disappoint.I ordered El Cubanito Burger, papa Rellena,Carne Con Papa, EmpanadasThe burger was massive and packed with the meats and seasoned greatly as the papa rellena looks interesting when first trying it but I love it.I got two empanadas as one was beef and the other was chicken. Not my favorite but it's edible, the Carne con papa is delicious whenever. Next day if you want but I really enjoy it as it comes off as family home cooked meals and such a hardy dish that the meat is tender and flavored right.
This is the only place ever that I have found that serves Costa Rican cuisine. Although it is a Cuban restaurant, they have arroz con pollo a la tica which was phenomenal. I will definitely be coming backDietary restrictions: Gluten friendly
Wow! Very very impressed with the flavorful food and the incredible service! Can't say enough good things. Amarilis took such good care of us and made great suggestions. Luis was very friendly and told us about their food truck located in the flea market which we will be sure to check out. If you want authentic delicious Cuban food you have got to try this spot ??
Food was delicious, the portions however where a lot smaller than expected. The only waiter spoke almost no English(which is sad when it is your first time here and you are not sure what everything is or how it comes). Also not a fan of how some of the appetizers are charged by a single item and not a portion of items.Food: 4/5
