Reviews - Chispas
Reviews summary
Chispas offers a mixed dining experience. While some patrons rave about the tacos, guacamole, and excellent service, others express disappointment in cleanliness, slow service, and overcooked meat. Highlights include a variety of tasty tacos, top-notch corn tortillas, and delicious appetizers like green Chile queso and duck confit. Happy hour discounts and attentive staff are also notable. Mixed reviews on drinks with some recommending the frozen palomas. Overall, the restaurant earns an average rating of high 4s, with a pleasant atmosphere and a promise of enjoyable meals with a few hit-or-miss elements.
Was roro at Chispas a mag?
Recommend the Guisado and Sirloin tacos. Make sure to order some side items such as beans, guac, etc. Very delicious and great quality. Personally liked the flour tortillas but was amazed by the Corn tortillas. Very lively environment, great for groups. There is seating outside but did not get to check it out, maybe next time. What Raul Hagenes dislikes about Chispas:
I don’t normally have bad experiences at restaurants but I won’t be back to Chispas and don’t think it’s a place that is worth spending money at amongst the restaurants in Austin. Worst tacos I’ve ever had here. They brought the wrong ones at first, then the correct ones were small in portion and meat was way over cooked. Like I actually noticed how hard they were to chew. There are MUCH better places to get tacos, c... View all feedback.

The corn tortillas at this restaurant are incredible. You have to try the frozen palomas - they are a must! Our server, Juan, was exceptional. I highly suggest dining here. Even though I usually don't like beans, the borracho beans are delicious.
The restroom facilities for both men and women were incredibly unsanitary. It appeared as though they had not been cleaned in quite some time. Despite this, some of the food was enjoyable. However, my husband's taco had an undercooked egg, even for an "over-easy" preparation. The highlight of our experience was our waiter, who provided excellent service throughout our meal.

Tried out Chispas for happy hour during the week, we very much enjoyed the experience and I would recommend anyone spending some time downtown to check them out. We sat at the bar—the bar service was attentive and friendly and they made some good recommendations for us about their favorite tacos. The happy hour specials were great, especially for downtown $3 Pacifico Modelo, $6 margaritas, $5 queso among other similarly-priced specials, also a HH Taco of the Day). The food came out quickly and exceeded my expectations. Reading some other reviews gave me the expectation that it might be bland but that was not my experience at all. I had the Wild Mushroom and Pork Belly Adobado tacos and they were both well and heavily seasoned and packed with flavor. I will echo the sentiment that the tortillas were a little on the thick side, but they were clearly made fresh and were high quality. Overall, if the quality of the food and specials continues then I could easily see Chispas becoming my new go-to taco spot for lunch or happy hour.
Crazy good vegetarian tacos and queso! Top that with a few game day options we stumbled into and this was a delicious and economical meal.
Chispas overall was great. I rate it somewhere around a 4.6-4.7 overall which is why I gave it 5 stars over 4. The location and atmosphere were nice and the staff was attentive and friendly. For drinks, we tried their house margarita and a glass of wine. For food, we got the Chicharones and green chili queso for appetizers and the following four tacos: chicken mole, pork belly adobado, Carne Asada, and the Baja pescado. The chicharones were good but the green Chile queso was amazing. Our two favorite tacos were the Baja pescado and pork belly adobado. The other two were still good. I also decided to try an east gulf oyster which was good but one costs $2.95. Happy hour is between 3 and 6pm daily so our drinks and appetizers were a dollar off. They also do a happy hour taco but we didn’t get it. Definitely excited to come back and try some other tacos along with their elotes.
Decent tacos for the price and location. Not very authentic but still very good. Great service and draft selection

We went for restaurant week. We felt the menu was very overpriced. The fish tacos were good but the mushroom tacos seemed very greasy and the butternut squash tacos were overly salty and burnt.
Had a quick bite here. The food was very tasty and the service was great. My paloma was just so so though. It just didn't taste quite right. It was pretty lively for being early on a Saturday night, so if super loud restaurants are not your thing, you may want to sit outside or avoid visiting during busy times.
Food was delicious. Waiter was friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend this place!
If you crave a fast food experience at 4X the price, this place hits the spot! The margaritas tasted so cheap, I couldn 't finish mine (this is a first for me). I ordered the Burraco, which is a burrito stuffed with a Deluxe Crispy Taco. But the DCT is not even on the menu, so that weird. FYI: The meat in the DCT is steak, but could actually be beef jerky it was so tough and dry. Our waiter, Truett, rushed us right through the whole dining experience. We sat down at 6:30 and were done by 7. He was so anxious to get us out of there, he asked my husband if he was ready for the bill as a forkfull of food was en route to his mouth! If you do, try this place stick to the green chili queso, the store bought chips, and cerveza.
