What Daniel M doesn't like about Cafe Malta:
First time in as a couple. I 'll say the apps were really good. Mussels were excellent. Wife and I both thought our entree portions were small. We 'd have eaten nearly twice that much if we made the same thing at home. As far as the pork shoulder entree, we do actually make it at home quite a bit, and I thought I 'd see how a pro did it. Great food. our server was the only one in this night a d she did great!
Not complaining! the food was excellent, the service was the same (where we dinner at the busiest perhaps evening of the year,) the menu full surprises (but we wished for an salat at the end, although this a small comment). we are happy to have this rare gem of a restaurant in s austin!
A favorite cafe. The ambiance reminds me of a restaurant I visited in southern France. Great food and service.
We live in the Chicago area and have been visiting Austin for 10 years due to our daughter living here. We have been to Cafe Malta numerous times over that time frame and have found their food to be exceptional. The fixed priced New Year's Eve dinner was very good, but not as good as their usual menu items. I believe the volume of food that needed to be prepared in the time frame they allowed caused some problems. My wife and I enjoyed the selections up until the dessert, which was disappointing, in that it was not soft and delicious, it was over cooked and dense. The overall experience will not keep me from going back in the future, though. One course does not make a meal, and we were happy with the meals, but not the last course.
We were seated on arrival, it was about 3/4 full, but it soon filled up. We selected our meals , the server Jason was quick to respond throughout our meal. Food was served hot and we both enjoyed our selections. Ceviche to start (ok but spicy wit jalapeños), followed by snapper and d’affete (both very tasty) and crème brûlée. The only down note was the Turkish Chardonnay recommended by Jason, dry with little body. It was also a more expensive selection. Other than that it was an enjoyable dinner
