Description

The Broken Spoke is a historic old restaurant with a very museum-like feel that offers a unique Texas experience. Some diners had mixed feelings about the food, with complaints about the chicken fried steak and undercooked brisket, while others found the dishes to be delicious. The dance lessons, led by instructor Terry, received mixed reviews, with some finding them enjoyable and others feeling they were not worth the cost. The atmosphere of the restaurant was praised for its charm and traditional honky-tonk vibe, with live music from bands like The Derailers and Alvin Crow adding to the fun. Despite some negative feedback about the run-down appearance and service, many patrons had a great time at The Broken Spoke, highlighting its uniqueness and historical significance as a must-visit spot in Austin.

Never been, just want to and can't wait. I found this place because it was featured on the cover of George Strait's latest album, Honky Tonk Time Machine. I think it's cool. But why did he choose this place as the album cover? Was it a tribute to the founder? Does it hold a special place in his heart? Was he good friends with the Founder?

Fun place and you simply MUST do the dance lessons with Terry on Saturday- she is hilarious.Very traditional band the night we were there, but dancing was still good. Cash is king here.

Great old place, very historical, great museum. Got the chicken fried steak. Was no flavor and too stringy, worst cfs I ever had. Brisket plate was undercooked. Waitress was OK, dance lessons was the instructor talking 90% of the time and never got to the western swing. OK dance floor, could've used some sawdust. Sweated in the restaurant, dance floor was cooler. Liked the music from the derailers. Bar staff was good.

An institution. So glad to have been able to visit Texas’ honky tonk capital. Grabbed a beer and whiskey at the bar, perused the memorabilia, and checked out the dance hall before the main event during my short stay in Austin.

We took some out of town visitors here and they loved it! Good food, friendly staff, great music, and tons of atmosphere. The only downside was having to pay for the poorly led dance lesson what a waste of time and money. Everything else was great!
