Birdie's - Austin
Birdie's
Description
Birdies offers a vibrant dining atmosphere with a menu of frequently updated and inventive dishes. The quality of food varies, with highlights like the Orecchiette and fried polenta, but some dishes fall short of expectations. The service is consistently praised for its attentiveness, although the atmosphere can be marred by loud music and a lack of indoor seating. Pricing also raises eyebrows, particularly with added wellness charges. Despite these drawbacks, many guests appreciate the restaurant's unique offerings and are eager to return, indicating that Birdies’ charm and culinary creativity resonate with diners.

I'm rarely at a loss for words, but Birdie's left me speechless after the incredible experience I just had. Calling it a meal doesn't do it justice—it felt more like visiting a family member or close friend's home. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and inviting. I immediately felt at ease. The wine list was impressive, perfectly complementing the meals. I started with the olives, just the right balance of salt and spice. The chilled gazpacho was ideal for a hot Texas evening; I'm usually not a fan, but this was perfectly balanced, flavorful, smooth, and creamy. The cucumber salad was not only beautifully presented but also bursting with bold flavors—I couldn't believe how good it was and almost ordered another! For my main course, the snapper was outstanding—well-balanced, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The toast with the tangy spread added just the right touch of acidity. Dessert was the sweet corn soft serve—yes, sweet corn ice cream—and it was surprisingly delightful, with just the right amount of sweetness. A highlight for me was seeing Tracy managing the kitchen and Arjav serving tables. Their dedication and passion for their restaurant were evident, and it enhanced the whole experience. Every time I visit Austin, I will definitely return to Birdie's. If I could give it more than 10 stars, I would give it 11.
Best food I have had in several years. Salad, handmade pasta, minute steak and cherry dessert were all perfect. Nice chill vibes.
Menu is very specialized and updated daily. The food is very good, but there will only be a few options available, so it may not appeal to everyone. (Ex: I had to ask if they could do basic bread service which they did right away. Unfortunately they could not offer butter for the bread which surprised me, but oh well Atmosphere is nice, but it’s almost entirely outdoor so plan accordingly for Texas heat. Been 2 times and may go back in the future. Overall a fine experience for a nice meal. I wish they had more flexibility in the kitchen, but that’s probably not their goal as a restaurant. All charges start with an assumed 20% tip with options for 22% or 25%, so it felt a little aggressive on that front (18% is standard-perhaps they assume they start above regular standards? .
Unbeatable experience. They came out to give me the chance to order a glass of wine while I waited in line, the host was a treasure and took his time walking me through the menu as if there was no line, and they read my mind every step of the way. The food is divine best tartare I’ve ever had and sitting at the chef’s counter was magic. I will go every day I can go.
There was a line to get in. Instead of going to the hostess to put your name down, they just let a few people at a time come in and order food at the “counter”. From there, it’s open seating mostly outdoors but they have strong fans so it wasn’t too uncomfortable. Unpretentious overall, with the focus being on good food that’s well prepared. The beef tartare was excellent, with the acidity perfectly balanced by the (what I assume was) homemade mayonnaise underneath. The tagliatelle tasted like a perfect margherita pizza, but as pasta. The last bite was just a wonderful as the first. The minute steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The shishito potato side was okay, but neither of us enjoyed the peppers. I’m not entirely sure why I usually like shishito peppers. The only dish we didn’t enjoy was the cantaloupe with ham. It wasn’t bad by any means, it just wasn’t great. The cantaloupe was perfectly ripe but for some reason, for us, didn’t pair well with the ham and balsamic vinegar. I thought it tasted too peppery. The service was excellent.
