Really delicious food in a super quirky environment. Definitely worth a visit, and even a longer trip. The owner did almost the entire restaurant in his own artwork, and it is worth noticing all the details.
This is an absolute hidden jewel of Astoria, Queens and is as authentic as it gets. Mustafa is the owner, boss and menu curator. He is also the artist who designed the interior and the outside of the restaurant with a lively colorful and diverse art collection. He is not just an artist, his dishes are art and it is obvious that this is his passion. The outside of the restaurant is decorated with tiles and protection of the evil eye, and the interior is like a walk in an artist's living room. He will warmly welcome you and put you as if you would visit your favorite and hospitable uncle. When you ask for a menu, he will say “I am the menu” with a huge grin. He goes to the market every day to curate his daily offer carefully. I was happy enough to have experienced Mombar three times. The first time I had a common sampler of everything and could not believe how tasteful and delicate the meat was. The spices are from this world. The second time I had Tagin and the third time I had lamb. I remember a really good beet salad. If you like Egyptian food, art, hospitality and a lively culinary experience, Mombar will exceed your expectations.

It will give you home Vibes where you can find books and other things to spend time with your family.
Absolutely fantastic experience. The owner Mustafa serves delicious authentic Egyptian cuisine. The place is beautiful with many works of art by the owner.
We initially did not notice this restaurant in the midst of the bright and shiny restaurant-hookah lounge on Steinway St. But I am glad that we noticed this jewel and dined here. The owner Moustafa is a really interesting person who he is also the cook, waiter, host and designer of the place! The restaurant is a sniffing summit in the artistic perspective and the thought process of the boss. He is clearly very passionate about what he does, and no words can do justice to his craftsmanship. He was funny, entertaining and extremely welcoming. Food definitely takes time, but I think this is an indispensable part of the experience and you should not complain about it. The food felt like at home and tasted very delicious. The meat was cooked for perfection. The lamb Shank with spinach was my favorite. Step in Mombar brings you to another time and I will definitely be back for more.
