I have enjoyed this dish many times and the best is still at Tanuki. Tender salmon, hint of avocado, just enough heat from the jalapeños and warm rice make for a delicious lunch paired with an Ebi Sunomo salad. Service is courteous and efficient. Atmosphere is relaxing. View all feedback.
What Célina Normand doesn't like about Tanuki Sushi House Inc:
We both had the bent box. The sushi was dry, the teriyaki chicken should be put on top of the rice, the edamme beans were good, the shrimp was good but the noodles were a bit cold. Service was good but we were the only ones in there at the time. View all feedback.
I am a very understanding and forgiving person, and I guess it was an off day for Tanuki, but no one should be spoken down to like that, especially someone so young.I just felt I should share my experience so they can grow as a business, and not make those mistakes again. I am not out to tarnish their reputation, as most viscous people would be out to do. I could not find a menu online, so I called and ordered what I usually do at Haru. It was my first time here, so you'd think they'd care about my experience. When I got there I was told my order wasn't ready yet (45 min wait time too!!) I paid and opened a menu to see what was in my order (assuming it was a prawn) it turned out it was BBQ eel (not a fan). When I asked to have it taken out and put a prawn in, turns out they don't have a deep fryer, I told them an ebbi fry was just fine! I heard the lady getting mad at the poor little server saying "she ordered it, she paid for it, she's taking it." I was SHOCKED. There was 1 table in the restaurant, and the restaurant was clean as well. Now apparently my order was ready, just when I ask for a small change 5 mins past my 45 minute wait time. In my experience, take out is put in the order of all of the orders. For a small town with competition, that's not acceptable in my books. How she was talking to her staff was not ok, the poor girl was so scared to come out and talk to me. I told her that it wasn't her fault and not to worry about it because she almost had tears in her eyes after speaking with the lady in the back. I'm not cheap, I tipped $10 as well before this all happened. I did not get a refund, or that roll taken off. I took the roll since I ordered it, apparently I had to take it. I got in my car and went right to Haru. I spent another $20+ and tip there and it took about 7 minutes to make my order. I will NEVER return to Tanuki. I am not one to complain as I have worked in restaurants before, this was a first for me and I was upset about the experience for a few days. Very disappointing. This review is not about the type of "cuisine" it was about how I was treated as a customer, and how the server was treated as a staff member.
First off, just want to cover for the world of readers -this is a family owned & run business, the owners literally live upstairs! they put so much love into their guests authentic experience, so if your high expectations of 'sushi' is based on deep fried prawns & california rolls... well maybe you should just try somewhere else and keep the table open for someone who actually appreciates what tanuki has to offer! my husband & I eat here every single tuesday #sushituesday & quite often get a togo order for dinner or the next day. I have a gluten allergy to top it off & I have NEVER had a problem ordering a meal. they do have a small place & the husband-wife team create every dish while usually 1 (amazing!) server runs the floor. wait times are to be expected, especially when togo orders are placed on top of the dining-in orders during the lunch or dinner rush. remember, there are only 2 people cooking everything & of course everyone is hungry/comes in at the same time!! when long wait times are given, you should assume they are flipping busy! any work place can create a stressful environment & let's be real -the super man & woman who run the show are only human! we have waited for food many times, but seriously... we just appreciate our meal that much more when we get it! what should you get?!? OMG THEY HAVE LIKE A 4 PAGE MENU TO CHOOSE FROM FOR PETE'S SAKE!! there is soooo much variety! something for everyone, but my husband says you should try: sushi pizza, yakibuta ramen, gyoza &/or the spicy tuna roll. myself: jyako Caesar salad, agedashi tofu, tako sunomono, chopped scallop &/or spicy salmon roll! this is not a fast food restaurant, this is a fine dining experience for a fraction of the price, in small town armstrong! (we are so spoiled!) sucks that people want to tarnish what this couple has worked so hard to build with one off-experience, as the internet is such a powerful & impactful tool I hope no-one writes this place off because of someone else's opinion (but you should totally go because of my opinion.. lol). everyone is allowed to have a bad day for crying out loud & humans (that's us) make mistakes sometimes! sooo if you choose not to try tanuki, that's cool -but like I already said, if that's the case, keeps that table open for us! WE LOVE YOU TANUKI.... SEE YOU NEXT TUESDAY!

A small resteruant with traditional Japanese decor is situated in the corner of the town of Armstrong. Very suitable for a short stay and to please hungry belly on the way of driving. The food here makes me pleasantly surprised. Did not expect food is very original. Because the owner is a silent Japanese man, his wife is very friendly and talkative; You will feel familiar with her first time to met.I will come back again
I have been in Japan and like Japanese cuisine. That is why I like this restaurant. The cook is really from Japan and the food is taste as good as in Japan. The staff and the owner are always friendly. It is important that the prices are reasonable. I have been in this restaurant mostly for a lunch with my friends. The food and service there are consistent and good. It is definitely the best in the Okanagan area.
