On the outside, the place looks a bit like a steakhouse one might see at a US shopping mall but the interior was tastefully decorated with a Argentine/pampas feel (of course)...lots of wood/leather and gaucho artifacts....The pisco sour was great, the meats were varied and well presented (we had a mixed grill served in a sort-of mini hibachi type thing). Service was quite good as well. Around 8:30 ish a steady trickle of well-heeled locals began to filter in...evidently this is a popular restaurant with the Yanahuara upper-middle class set. By the time we left at around 9 the place was pleasantly humming. All in all, a very good, though not sensational, meaty meal with all the trimmin 's.
Steak lovers loved it. I had chicken and I thought it was overpriced...good but not great. Everyone who had salad was sick the next day.
Service of a starred restaurant. Best meat, creative dishes, good wine selection, cheap and good salad buffet. One of the best steak restaurants I have eaten in the world. Everything is right here. Lots of locals can not be wrong. Do not be put off...by the TripAdvisor review. The restaurant is not as expensive as stated.
Based upon reviews, we thought this would be a great place for a great steak. But sadly my medium rare Lomo Fino (the best cut available) did not bleed because it was so perforated to tenderize it and I am certain it had been soaked...in brine to make it appear large and tender. It was tasteless. As were the offerings of my two friends who had joined me. So how can a restaurant further disappoint? They can attempt to over charge which they did, by US$30.00 over the 15% tip offering. Why did I tip? So as not to embarrass my friends stupid, eh? Yup, stupid! Here is how they tried to cheat us: When paying by CC in a foreign country, ALWAY's pay in the local currency. If you attempt to pay in US dollars, there may be a restaurant exchange rate. The exchange rate at El Gaucho was US$30.00 on top of other costs. We caught them, and directed that they bill us in local currency. We always provide as honest a feedback as possible while traveling. Rarely do we need to leave negative feedback. I have nothing nice to offer about this restaurant.
