You Me Dining
Description
Ho Kee Cafe brings spirited Hong Kong–style Cantonese to the San Gabriel Valley, serving generous, expertly prepared classics from roast duck and house chow mein to foie gras chow mein and seasonal seafood. The bustling, film‑like dining room is warm and welcoming, with efficient staff, takeout kiosks, outdoor seating and banquet-friendly portions—ideal for groups and seafood lovers. Expect busy service, slightly higher prices and occasional oily or watery desserts; reservations recommended during peak hours.

I was particularly impressed with their seasonal seafood offerings, like the gigantic prawns! We enjoyed boiled cod in a mildly peppery sauce, which was delicious without the extreme heat found in some Szechuan dishes. They also prepared lobster in a variety of ways. The orange pork chop was simple but flavorful—much less greasy than similar dishes at Panda, and far more tasty. We even ventured into offal, sampling braised tripe with turnips, and a cold appetizer of thinly sliced beef stomach served with cucumber, green onion, and bell pepper. My friends loved the steamed oysters (though I prefer them raw), and I have to highlight the foie gras chow mein—it was fantastic! The crispy pork belly stir-fried with romanesco broccoli was another standout; I find myself craving it just thinking about it! This place truly feels like home to me. You can opt for simple, delicious noodle dishes for one or a few, or host an elegant banquet featuring exquisite seafood and rare Cantonese delicacies. I absolutely adore this restaurant! A quick note: their water is fully filtered, so you don’t have to worry about unpleasant tap water. I highly recommend this spot. Although it’s labeled as a café, they offer a plethora of culinary treasures in Cantonese cuisine, making it possible to organize a banquet fit for royalty. Just be sure to check in advance about what's available, and it’s wise to make reservations during busy hours.
The service was warm and welcoming, but the food prices can rack up quickly, making it a great option to visit with a group. You'll surely have leftover food to take home! However, they do not serve desserts. We ordered the mall tofu, pineapple fried rice, and duck. The side of rice we chose was enormous! After our meal, we ended up completely devouring SpongeBob's house. The duck had a flavor similar to a rich, hearty chicken—it's more robust and indulgent, but truly delicious.
The roast duck and sliced pork preserved egg porridge are exceptional, while the Shi Qi Pigeon and steamed egg are only average. This restaurant is among the few that offer outdoor dining, and I want to thank HO KEE Cafe for providing this option!
HONG KONG Excerpt from Eat the World Los Angeles: Ever since opening, the original Ho Kee Cafe on Del Mar Avenue in San Gabriel has been busy, its smaller space often bursting at the seams with humanity. Lively groups of customers, people waiting for tables or takeout orders, and efficient service weaving their way in and out of both. This led to the opening of a second, larger branch in Arcadia in the spring of last year. These days (2020) you will not get to sit near the kitchen, see the roasted ducks hanging, and hear them being chopped up after putting in your orders, but the food remains at the same level it has since opening. Often times you will sit next to tables with Cantonese being spoken in Hong Kong accents, it almost feels like a Wong Kar-wai film when the foods start arriving. Wear your best vintage clothing!
Food was great! Place was moderately busy for Sunday lunch but I heard from a friend passing by that it was packed on Saturday lunch. Price is a little higher than similar HK cafes. Definitely try their house special chow mein and the pork hock soup was good. Front entrance has a self order kiosk for take out orders. Would recommend bringing friends for lunch. Atmosphere was good, spacious, and staff were very knowledgeable and on top of things.
