Great restaurant with a great terrace in the summer. Food is very nice and healthy. I always choose the fish in the menu and i is very fresh. The service is impeccable. I go there from time to time with my girlfriends and we all want to come back. Never try the deserts though. View all feedback.
We were 9, 7 French and us, 2 Americans. The location along the river was perfect to watch the Bastille Eve fireworks. The food is fresh, interesting combinations and well presented. However, when our entrée dishes were cleared, the server placed our cutlery on the table and did not exchange it. We all looked quizzically at each other. Although American, we have eaten extensively in France. I can hardly recall, even in tiny family bistrots, not having cutlery changed between courses. One friend remarked especially when the entrée was fish and the main meat. Hopefully that night was an exception.

We went there twice and the food was delicious and balanced between proteins and vegetables. Really a good moment. The restaurant Is small and it's better to reserve.
I've now had three meals at Bistrot des Carmes and all were excellent as was the service. The owner/waiter is the son of a highly regarded vigneron in the Muscadet region, so, while not a sommelier, he knows his wines and carries very good ones (the chenin produced by Tessa Laroche was incredible). Now, the food. At our most recent lunch, we had a mushroom soup starter, but soup doesn't really do the dish justice. There was a row of salad vegetables floating on one side with rolled slices of Parma ham on the other. It was like an appetizer plate rather than a single dish, and it worked remarkably well. 6 of us didn't say a word for about 10 minutes! The main course for most of us was pork - very tender and served over a puree of squash, with wonderful scoops of mashed potatoes at each end and a bed of al dente beans and carrots. We all cleaned our plates. Dessert, for most, was individual lemon meringue pies, with the meringue molten under a crusty top and the filling intensely lemon, just the ticket to cleanse the palate. We'll certainly be back. And the walk along the Maine River, where the Quai des Carmes is, does wonders to whet the appetite before a meal. Service compris.
I came into this Steak n Shake to eat at about 11 PMIt was very clean.
