Dropped in here on the off chance there would be a table. Should not have worried as mid week and the place was fairly quiet. Was assisted with the menu and had a great dinner utilising local produce including a sheep cheese salad to start...and a a fish that must have been a close cousin of a Trout if not actually one. All accompanied by some good Austrian wine. Definitely be back next time in Althofen. Would recommend.
You are somewhere in Carinthia and like to enjoy a fantastic dinner? If not too far, you should make the effort and drive to Althofen to pay the restaurant Bachler a visit. From the moment Ms Bachler comes to your table to welcome you, strangely...enough you feel like being at your best friend’s place and have been here already many times. Ms Bachler’s charming personality in combination with her in-depth wine knowledge is truly unique. And here even the Chef, Mr Bachler, takes the time to come from the kitchen to your table, to advise you, to talk about dishes and their ingredients or to explain the various cheeses on your extraordinary cheese platter (believe me, there were such rare cheeses you can’t find anywhere else in Austria and in not too many places in Europe . Did I miss something? Oh, the food. No need to talk about it – whatever you order is truly excellent. Best organic vegetables, fish, beef, pork, lamb, chicken, … from farmers in the region known to the Bachler’s for many years. And all cooked to perfection. I had a filet steak which I ordered rare – and so it was. Extremely tasteful and well aged meat which nobody could cook in a more perfect way – inside dark purple and not cold but slightly warm and no blood draining out. Amazingly good! And lamb chops – presumably the best we had for years. And we also had fish – a Char filet from a local river, pan fried to perfection. As desert I had to have the selection of cheeses (see above but the ladies had the desert variations – to die for! (not only because of the quantity! . What a fantastic evening – the only downside was that I had to drive and therefore could not enjoy all the wines such a dinner normally asks for. But I’ll be back!
