Bear Wallow Cafe - Alpine
Bear Wallow Cafe
Description
Nestled in Alpine, this small‑town mountain café serves hearty breakfast and lunch staples—locally sourced plates, burgers, chicken‑fried steak and pie—alongside quick, friendly service and clean restrooms. Generous working‑man and senior portions, kids’ options and souvenir mugs make it a practical stop for tourists, riders and families. A no‑cellphone policy preserves a cozy vibe for some, but bold political signage creates a polarizing atmosphere. Food consistency varies: standout comfort dishes are balanced by reports of undercooked sides, burnt edges and the absence of real maple syrup and butter.

Bear Wallow is a little hidden gem in Alpine. The people are the best. Food is fabulous! Family owned for many years.
Love this little place! The food is great and the old town atmosphere with all kinds of antiques to look at from years past.
This is a great little mountain town cafe! We drove in there from Three forks to get breakfast and everything was great. They atmosphere is definitely my kind of place and the gal's working there were fantastic. Pretty much exactly what you want out of a mountain cafe. Only knock is that they don't have real maple syrup or real butter. That's so hard to find at restaurants nowadays, but you would think a small mountain town would have that. Either way, fantastic place, highly recommend.
Always fantastic! The food is delicious, and the staff are wonderful. The best breakfast around!
I remember fondly coming here as a kid, unfortunately now it seems this place is another casualty of the hateful vitriol spewing from one specific person and their ilk. Vote for who you want but it's so weird how this becomes a person's whole personality and gets to off-putting extremes. The uncomfortable atmosphere would be hard to overlook even if the food was absolutely stellar, but it's not, it's barely Denny's quality at best. The scrambled eggs were meh, the biscuits were burnt on the edges with bland gravy and the hash browns were undercooked.
