Hyde Out - Akron
Hyde Out
Description
Tucked into Akron’s neighborhood bar scene, this divey spot doubles as an unexpected sushi destination. Expect friendly, fast service, a generous sushi menu, bar food and a selection of unique taps—good for quick takeout or casual nights. Food quality is hit-or-miss: standout rolls and attentive staff contrast with occasional texture, freshness and cleanliness issues. The place is lively and informal, with occasional noise and a small, surprising credit‑card service fee. Worth a try for adventurous locals, but not for those seeking a pristine fine‑dining experience.

I can't lie, I was kind of sketched when I got there. Sushi Bar? Inside an adjacent bar in the south Akron? I'll tell you something. The sushi cook had it on its own. I was blown away from food and service! There were so many possibilities of sushi that I didn't even recognize existed. The prices were not bad either. They offer several buy 1 get 1 half out and the waitress was happy to help us everything we wanted for the best price. It was so delicious, hands down the best sushi I ever had. I will definitely come back!
I normally don't complain but this was super bad. Me and my mom spent 70+ dollars for the worst meal ever. The shrimp was not deveined (meaning the poop shoot was still in the shrimp. The tempura batter was not actual tempura batter, it was corn meal. Like did white people make this? The shrimp, stake and chicken was all over cooked. It was tough and hard to bite in. The sashimi was not fresh at all and left a nauseating feel after eating it. I don't know how this could have gotten 4 stars when this is abhorred. Save your money people don't go here!
I decided to visit this dive bar, which is also one of the best sushi spots in Akron. I’ve never been disappointed with the food, although the restaurant itself could definitely use some improvements.
It took around 15 minutes of waiting, waving my hands, and going up to the sushi counter twice before I could get a server’s attention. I visited on a Tuesday evening, so it wasn’t particularly busy. Once we finally had a server, she was friendly, helpful, and efficient, so I’m not sure what delayed her initially. I was surprised by the menu, which had a lot of American-style sushi rolls (my personal favorites), but I chose the bento dinner box instead. Unfortunately, it didn't compare to any other bento boxes I've had in different states. This one didn’t include miso soup or salad, which was disappointing. The main dish was coated in a heavy corn starch brown sauce rather than a light teriyaki glaze. My boyfriend ordered chicken lo mein, which was decent and came in a good portion. The only reason this place earned two stars is because they have darts and pool tables. Playing several rounds while waiting for our food was really fun, and they didn’t charge for it like some bars do, which was a nice bonus. However, I probably won’t intentionally return to this restaurant.
This Hyde Out should stay hidden. Stopped in for lunch on my way through town. It is a dive bar atmosphere with a sushi bar at the end of the bar. I was not going to order sushi as I was afraid it wouldn't hold up to my expectations. I intended to order something safe from the kitchen, but the menus we received only had sushi options. After ordering, we looked at the single slim drink menu out of curiosity and it turned out to be a kitchen menu with burgers, sandwiches and such. Oh well, order was in and too late to change, so here we go... Sushi looked good on arrival and tasted okay, although the texture was off-putting. Shrimp was dry and rubbery. Ginger and wasabi was dry and devoid of flavor. Service was fast, friendly and attentive. 5 hours later and I'm not sick yet. Fingers crossed.
