....better than all the rest. Nigel Tabb's restaurant is still the top fine dining experience to be had in West Cornwall. For those who know their wines, it has one of the best , well balanced and value for money wine lists around. Service is impeccable and supports the intimate atmosphere that has been created in this former pub just a relatively short walk from the centre of Truro. For a special celebration or one of Nigel’s occasional Sunday roasts (check the website) it is well worth seeking out. Booking is essential.
The restaurant is nicely situated on the outskirts of the old town of Truro. It was not busy when we went but the atmosphere was pleasant and the service helpful.
Had a great dinner at this intimate restaurant food was excellent quality and we really wanted to give 5 stars, but our overall experience was a bit less than that purely because the front of house, though very efficient, was rather brusque! We weren’t asked to try our wine it was just sloshed into our glasses...... But our food was well worth a visit and we shall go back!
Having been meaning to try Tabb’s for ages we eventually got around to going, but despite the rating on here it was very poor. Two things were wrong, the service and the food. The waitress looked and behaved as if she didn’t want to be there and certainly didn’t make us feel welcome. It was all very rushed and from the moment we got in we felt we were being harried to finish and get out, which was strange as there was only one other table occupied in the whole place. Although the individual elements of the dishes were well cooked, the combinations on the plate were just odd, like the chef was trying to be too clever and it just didn’t work.At over 100 pounds for 2 courses and wine, it wasn’t cheap, maybe we got a bad night but we won’t be going back
A mid evening arrival in Truro and a walk down from the Station to our hotel and we stumbled across this unassuming restaurant and looked at the menu and decided to give it a go. what with being tired after a long journey. What an unexpected delight this turned out to be. The restaurant from the outside is almost un-noticeable. Inside it's not too large. The welcome was sincere as we hadn't booked. The menu was well crafted. I had the Red Gurnard which was superb. There was a great choice of starter, and a wonderful tempting list of deserts both of which I resisted. We were a small teacup of mushroom and garlic soup with our bread which served well as an appetiser rather than a starter. A decent wine list to tempt and tease every diner and the table was refreshed with tap water as required without asking. The service was unobtrusive, If there was music, I never noticed it, and all in all a memorable mean on a mid winters evening after a long journey. Highly recommended by myself and my friends, and Tabb's will be re-visited again when we come back to Cornwall again.
