We visited on a Monday during the day. We had the beach mostly to ourselves for most of the day. The Pier was populated all day. But, there are bathrooms available which were cleaned continuously and well taken care of. The beach is clean. There were lifeguard stations where lifeguards are doing a great job monitoring. if you are ever visiting LA, it's a definite must on your itinerary, as a local I don't go out here because its a true tourist trap, sorry just not my fav. Unless there's an event or on a weekday non holiday. If you're a first timer, then yes, I would say go and explore.
