Was Anonym at Derby a mag?
We dined at the Derby Bar on Sunday evening. Despite the lively activities around the castle and the crowd of hotel guests and diners, we felt safe knowing that all current COVID protocols were being followed. What Anonym dislikes about Derby:
My parents and I truly enjoy Derby for its charming ambiance, warm hospitality, and friendly staff. However, we found the food disappointing. While the pub fare is generally acceptable, the paninis, sandwiches, and soups often tasted bland and uninspired. The wings were lacking in flavor, which made the meal less satisfying overall. Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience at Derby. With the perfect weather, we opted to sit outside on the spacious terrace. The staff guided us to our table, though they seemed somewhat distracted. Gavin went inside to order our drinks and collect the menus. Despite a lively atmosphere—especially with a staff wedding happening—there was some enjoyable live music that enhanced the mood. After placing our dinner orders, the staff became more attentive. The food was delicious and served promptly, well above typical bar standards. We particularly loved the chicken tacos and BBQ pork ribs, both outstanding. For dessert, we shared the apple pie. At first, it seemed unremarkable when served, but it turned out to be incredibly tasty and perfectly sized. If we’re in the area again, we would definitely return to Derby.
We had a fantastic experience at Derby, largely thanks to our wonderful waitress, Marta, who took exceptional care of us. She was extremely kind and friendly, and we truly enjoyed our conversations with her. The menu offered great options with generous portions. I would gladly give this place 5 stars; however, it was very busy when we arrived, and we ended up waiting 2 hours for a table. It would be wonderful if the hotel had more spaces where guests could relax and enjoy a drink while waiting, or perhaps a lounge area for coffee and unwinding. Thanks to Marta, our initial wait was made much more pleasant.

I have been to Derby multiple times over the past ten years and have always enjoyed their excellent seasonal dishes and occasional dinners in the main dining room. However, during a recent visit, I opted to try their bar food for a late lunch, and unfortunately, both my friend and I were let down. I ordered a Caesar salad that was soggy and bland, and I could barely finish a few bites. My friend’s open steak sandwich was equally disappointing.

While the pub fare is generally acceptable, the paninis, sandwiches, and soups often tasted bland and uninspired. The wings were lacking in flavor, which made the meal less satisfying overall. The upstairs restaurant is slightly better but still serves very average dishes that don’t match their prices. Although Derby has a lovely setting, it might be better to bring your own lunch to enjoy on the premises and simply have a drink at the bar.
