The Grillery offers a blend of commendable fish and chips, praised for its delicious and plentiful offerings at reasonable prices. While the grilled fish receives accolades, some diners have expressed disappointment over overcooked fish and hard, crispy chips, suggesting inconsistent preparation. The lack of salt and vinegar options has also been noted. Takeout service is generally efficient, although improvements in packaging could enhance the experience. The fish was delicious and the take-out service was good, but there were some negative points. The chips were either too small or too thick, there was no medium option and the fish was very hot and boiled with the skin on, which some people do not like and do not eat. The takeaway boxes were sturdy, but they needed a wider carry bag to lay them flat. Additional packaging would be helpful as well, as I had to carry the boxes under my arm and they were hot. The chips were a bit dry and crispy, and it seemed like they were not cooked at the same time as the fish. It was disappointing that there was no option for salt and vinegar, as the food tasted too salty. It seemed like my friend could taste salt even through the fish, so I'm not sure if it was added in the kitchen. The cost was reasonable at around £10.50 for a medium fish and large chips. When ordering online, there was no option for a medium fish, and they tended to default to large. Waiting for the order could be more comfortable, and having some reading material would be a nice touch.
I was extremely disappointed and left feeling crushed. My partner picked up takeout tonight and was shocked at the prices - over £22 for plaice and chips and cod and chips. To make matters worse, the fish was overcooked. What's more, we noticed an easily accessible menu showing both meals were £5 cheaper in total. When my partner asked about this discrepancy, he was told that they were not supposed to display those menus. There was no offer to honor the lower prices from the menu. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this restaurant.
Had read the beautiful reviews. the grilled fish was good, but very expensive. the oil that was used to taste as if it had been used too often. that spoiled the taste of the fish. beyond. were the chips very hard, can't imagine how they can do that.
We have recently moved into the opposite and are here several times. imho, the best fishing and chips in the city
