Zum Walfisch - Wyk auf Föhr

On my short visit to Wyk auf Föhr I wanted to make sure I got a table at Zum Walfisch so I arrived early on Friday for dinner (about 5:15 PM). The place has limited tables indoors and is located on good spot so I think it's quite busy during rush hours.For starters I had the fish soup. It was quite the perfect choice because it was a bit chilly day - tasty and nice amount of "kick" in it - but not too spicy! For main course I had the traditional sailor food - "labskaus". I was positively surprised about the size of the portion, ingredients and looks of this meal - back home similar sailor meals tend to be much simpler. The meal was so tasty I definitely wanted to finish it, but after it I had difficulties to eat all of my dessert ice cream which was quite big as well. Little siesta was in place after eating here! :)But the food was only one of the positives of eating here. I felt just like at home with the hospitality of the staff. They were smiling all the time and had a good sense of humour which was welcome as I was traveling alone. They also had no problem chatting in English, which was not well supported in some places on the town of Wyk. I left the place with full stomach and happy spirit.In summary I could describe the restaurant as casual and welcoming and the food as honest - plentiful in taste and size. I will definitely visit Zum Walfisch again if/when I return to the island of Föhr!

Seit vielen Jahren verbringe ich immer wieder Zeit auf der Nordseeinsel Föhr. Nahezu immer führt mich dann mein Weg auch in das Restaurant ZUM WALFISCH und ich werde dort immer sehr freundlich familiär aufgenommen. Das Lokal ist sehr sauber und mit viel Liebe zum Detail eingerichtet. Das Restaurant verfügt über ca.8 bis 10 Tischen innen und etwa ebenso vielen außen. In der Hochsaison ist das Restaurant stark frequentiert und so kann es auch manchmal hektisch werden, aber die Inhaber und das Personal sind stets bemüht ihren Gästen gerecht zu werden, auch wenn es sich nicht um Stammgäste handelt. Die Küche ist gehoben bodenständig. Es wird ausschließlich frisch gekocht und die Portionen sind üppig in einem guten Preisleistungsverhältnis. Mein Favorit ist die Scholle Finkenwerder, die in ihrer Zubereitung an Geschmack und Frische auf der Insel ihresgleichen sucht. DER WALFISCH ist sicher mehr Fisch- als Fleischrestaurant aber sind auch hier die Gerichte frisch zubereitet, das gute Rumpsteak ist hier besonders hervorzuheben. Besonders zu erwähnen sind auch die sehr appetitlichen Beilagensalate, die ich selten so in Grösse und Art der Anrichtung so gut erlebt habe. Ich kenne das Lokal über viele Jahre und habe ich die Leistung der Küche über diese lange Zeit immer als sehr kontinuierlich gut und gleichbleibend erlebt. Wer also gut bürgerliche norddeutsche Küche schätzt, ist hier in jedem Fall richtig und sollte den Besuch mit einer "polnischen Flagge (eine Spezialität des Hauses) beschliessen.

Die überwiegend sehr positiven Bewertungen sind für uns nicht ganz nachvollziehbar. Das Restaurant ist okay aber Platz 1 für Föhr? Insgesamt fanden wir das Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis nicht besonders. Insbesondere die Kinderessen sind unserer Meinung zu teuer. Das Kinderschnitzel ist definitiv für ein Kind zu viel. Alles in allem ist das Restaurant wie gesagt okay, uns fehlte aber das gewisse Etwas, sei es Athmosphäre oder wirklich super leckeres Essen.

This is yet another example where the top rated restaurant is far from being the best in town. In many occasions a popular restaurant with good value makes it to the top of TA. But in this case I really don't get it. The ambience is nothing special at all, simple and little attention to detail. The menu features rustic cuisine, well executed and tasty, but bordering expensive.My main issue with the place is that the customer is NOT king. No credit cards accepted, no reservations. A service that is efficient, but that doesn't respond well to criticism at all. Asking when food will be served 50 min after it was ordered will result in an answer "How do I know? Your food will be served when your order is due..." and a long rambling how difficult it is to run a restaurant nowadays. And since we complained that we waited for an hour, we were shown an order slip that proved we were in fact waiting for as little as 50 min...Well, our food was served just 2 minutes after. Again, the food was good. But with the shortcomings the place has, it's difficult to understand why this place is so well rated.So when you are just looking for a good meal, the place may be right. If you have any kind of elevated expectations towards your dinner, avoid!

Da ich den Walfisch schon in der Vergangenheit bewertet habe, möchte ich diesmal eher auf eine Reihe von Kommentaren hier eingehen, denn die Qualität der Speisen spricht nach wie vor für sich. Dass sich der Walfisch immer noch erlauben kann, auf Reservierungen zu verzichten, sollte mittlerweile bekannt sein. Wir waren heute zur Öffnung um 17 Uhr da und haben zu dritt ohne Probleme einen Tisch bekommen. In der vergangenen Woche waren wir zu fünft erst um 19 Uhr da, haben glücklicherweise auch sofort Platz bekommen. Wir hätten aber auch gewartet...Unsere Begleitung, die aus der Gastronomie kommt, war im Übrigen sehr angetan von den Speisen wie auch vom Service. Wenn Gäste sich nicht darauf einlassen wollen, dann sollten sie sich für ein anderes Restaurant entscheiden. Alternativen gibt es auf der Insel ja genug, aber das nach unserer langjährigen Erfahrung Beste würde man dann mit Sicherheit verpassen. Zum Schluss noch eine Bemerkung zur angeblichen Kinderunfreundlichkeit im Walfisch. Unser Sohn ist mittlerweile neun Jahre alt und wir kommen seit Jahren hierher. Er ist nicht nur wegen des Kinderschnitzels, sondern insbesondere wegen der herzlichen Chefin ein absoluter Fan des Walfisch.
