Contribute FeedbackNestled in the scenic Chiltern valley, The Gate Pub presents a mixed culinary experience. Patrons frequently appreciate the inviting atmosphere and friendly service, especially during family gatherings and Sunday roasts. Some highlights include delicious homemade dishes like Sriracha chicken and authentic curries, which draw in visitors from afar. However, there are notable inconsistencies; service can be sluggish, and food temperatures are often less than ideal. Dining quality varies, with observations of underwhelming portion sizes and occasional rudeness from staff. Overall, while The Gate Pub shows promise, a few diners have expressed hesitation about returning due to their recent experiences.
I had a great experience at The Gate during Sunday lunch. The food was all made in-house and the beef was cooked perfectly. We also tried the homemade apple crumble with custard, which was fantastic. My friend ordered the cheesecake and it was delicious. Our server, Johnathan, was very attentive and polite. He was knowledgeable about where the meat came from and how the desserts were made.
We were truly impressed by the high quality of the food when we dined at this restaurant last weekend. The Sriracha chicken starter and fish and chips main were both incredibly delicious. It was a special dining experience, and we are excited to return in the future.
This is a lovely pub nestled in a beautiful valley. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The food is of a high standard and is extremely tasty. The pub not only offers good pub food, it also makes authentic curries. People from far come to enjoy the 'The Curry Club ' that is held once a month. I highly recommend a visit.
Small menu but everything that our group of 5 had, was thoroughly enjoyed. Staff were friendly attentive.
We booked a table for 2 for 5pm. The person taking the call must have misheard and thought we were a party of 5. They confirmed they were expecting us for 5pm. No matter. We then asked what the meat was in the 'Pie of the day ' and was told it was beef so that 's what we ordered. The menu clearly stated it came with gravy but when it came out we had to ask for it. And to our surprise when we opened the pie it was chicken. I think it came with mushrooms and was flavoured with Tarragon. Now some people might not like that flavour. When we were asked if everything was OK we mentioned the fact that we were expecting beef and the person said that the pies must have been yesterday 's. Well I didn 't want yesterday 's pie but, by that time we had started to eat the dinner. So why can 't the pies be labeled 'beef ' or 'chicken '? My other problem was the grilled vegetables. They were far too undercooked. I like my vegetables with a bite but these barely saw any cooking. OK, I should have said something to the waitress but when you go out to dinner you don 't want to spend time complaining. The proprietors are trying to make a go of it putting on a free band for the evening and a reasonable children 's menu for what I saw, with a large play area to keep the children occupied but when you 're just out for a meal the meal itself is an important part of the experience.
