What User doesn't like about Staatlicher Hofkeller:
The cellar tour is really worth it. Takes around an hour but it feels like 15 minutes. Funny and informative, and you get a chance to explore a unique and historic wine cellar. With history going back 500 years. The wine shop itself is pointless. Impolite and unmotivated staff, not at all knowledgeable about their own products. The wine on the other hand is really good. Not the best in Würzburg, but definitely around... View all feedback.
After a tour of the Residenz, a tasting tour in the old cellar is a great way to finish the Residenz experience. You don't need to be a wine buff as the explanations given are clear and simple, and the wines are made at the Residenz also from locally produced grapes.

As a part of our Vantage River Cruise, we were treated to a wine tasting in the former Prince Bishop's Court Cellar after we had completed our tour of the Wurzburg Residenz. The State Hofkeller Würzburg is the third largest vineyard in Germany and has an annual production of approximately 850,000 bottles. We were lead through a long corridor lit by candles (a custom from ancient times to test the oxygen content of the basement air) and barrels into a room with long tables set with wine glasses and baskets of delightful bread (again surrounded by candles and barrels). The wine sommelier explained the 4 white wines during the tasting: 2016 Wurzburger Muller-Thurgau trocken, 2016 Wurzburger Innere Leiste Silvaner trocken, 2015 Wurzburger Stein Riesling trocken, and a 2015 Randersackerer Marsberg Riesling Auslese. After the tasting we were able to purchase wine in the cellar.
Leuke, interessante rondleiding inclusief glas wijn.
We entered the cellar (former Prince Bishop's Court Cellar) through a very long hall lit by candles in wine bottles in front of large wooden casks. At the end of the hall were several long tables, also lit with candles. The vintner did an excellent presentation of the wines and history. We tasted four of the wines and all were very good. The bottle shape of all the wines look like the Mateus bottle, but the Germans were first. It was a wonderful setting for a wine tasting. Don't miss it after you tour the palace.
