Four of us had ample food for $60.00. Tax and generous tip included. The large and excellent hot and sour was enough for us all. The spring rolls were fresh and tasty. We shared two main dishes. While they were heavy on noodles, they were...More View all feedback.
What Jamie Centeno doesn't like about Nhu Quynh Restaurant:
We have bien there before, but yesterday there was a fly on a clean spoon , also a clean fork had food on it. I had to ask for a clean set of spoons and fork. Also my daughter found a long hair on the pho. My husband asked for the difference between two soups and the did not explained or describes what ingredients it had. Honestly, we WON 'T come back ! Bom atendimento, comida saborosa, muita diversidade da culinária chinesa e vietnamita. O preço é bem acessível, pode-se comer muito bem pagando barato.
I'm from Toronto, and have visited Winnipeg on and off since 2008 or so. One of the first restaurants I visited in Winnipeg was Nhu Quynh. It was at the suggestion of a family friend who used to live in the area. At the time, decent Chinese food was a bit hard to come by in Winnipeg (by Toronto standards), but supposedly Winnipeg had a fantastic Vietnamese food scene. And this is the place she took me to. Its true what you read in some of these reviews here - the place is dingy, kind of dirty. Place could use a make over. But then again, so could most of good diners out there, and honestly most of the Pho places I've been to have questionable decor and cleaning practices, so it didn't exactly frighten/worry me.I actually get worried when I see a superficially pretty Pho place.. but back to my life story.I know we tried the cane shrimp, and those vermicelli platters with the pork balls that you wrap yourself. But what I loved, and what keeps me coming back, was the Satay Beef Noodle Soup.I don't know what kind of voodoo magic they put in the stuff, but their Satay Beef Noodle Soup is the best I've had in Canada, and I've tried Pho restaurants in every Province (at least whenever I see one where I am). While the quality has gone slightly downhill since Day 1 (noticed they weren't throwing in Lemongrass into the soup anymore.. or as much.. .for example) the end product is still overall leaps and bounds better than any other place I've been. My only real gripe is that they only sell the thing in a small size.I still remember the most pathetic attempt at Satay Beef Noodle Soup - it was Pho Bo Ga II in Ottawa, where I ate for my birthday in 2010... for an extra 50 cents they made my Pho "satay" by adding a dab of chili oil.I've had other foods at Nhu Quynh recently as well, and while they're competent and all, they're overall no better or worse than most places I've been to.So don't let the story of the decor and cleanliness scare you - quite honestly, it's no worse than your legit greasy spoon, and it's what McDonalds would look like if the media wouldn't make a field day of anything and everything they do.Just remember, whatever it is you order, it's merely meant to complement to awesomeness that is the Satay Beef Noodle Soup.
We have been going to this restaurant for many years and the food is always delicious however the floors are usually littered with food particles and paper. We decided some time ago to use take out only because of the messy floors. We did have dinner in the restaurant today and should not have as the floors were a mess.
We tried the restaurant following our 3 week trip to Vietnam where we ate some of the most delicious food we'd ever had. After being back for only 2 days, we were missing the cuisine and needed a "fix." We decided on Nhu Quynh based on a restaurant review by then Winnipeg Free Press critic Marion Warhaft who had given it 4 stars. The restaurant is very sparsely furnished and unwelcoming. If the food had been good, it would make up for it. Sadly, it wasn't and further, the restaurant was grimy and filthy. We were seated at a table that was only superficially wiped. The wall against which it abutted was splattered with food. And the bottles filled with condiments were covered with food debris. The salad rolls (No.1) that were described as top notch, were bland: Not enough mint and too much vermicelli. The shrimp were also flavourless and flaccid. No. 4, charbroiled pork, was pedestrian. The chili-spiced shrimp with red and green peppers, (No. 89) had some bite but was short on the lemongrass. A dish which Warhaft panned banh xeo (No.7) was the best of the lot and as good as the many versions we had in Vietnam. The staff are extremely loud and obnoxious. There is shouting from the kitchen and two wait persons who sat down in the restaurant for a meal were shrill. Inside voices ladies.
