While the ambiance and attentive staff are frequently praised, some guests have noted inconsistencies in the quality of coffee and breakfast offerings, with concerns about portion sizes and preparation methods. Despite minor criticisms, many diners have found joy in the homemade meals and comfortable atmosphere, making it a hidden gem worth revisiting for a relaxing meal or coffee break.
Nice breakfast, lovely people but don’t ask to buy a piece of cake to take away, paid £2.50 for this, see photo, put in a paper bag broken in half and extremely small !!
Friendly little cafe hidden from the main area. We had tried to get into another of the town’s cafes but it was busy. Luckily we came across the Anvil on our way back to the car. The building itself is beautiful and very quaint. We ordered a Ploughman’s and a French onion soup. The soup was nicely hot and came with the requested gluten free bread as advertised. I have yet to find gf bread nicer than this and thoroughly enjoyed it with lashings of butter. The ploughman’s was plentiful with fresh salad garnish and lots of cheddar, stilton and gammon ham. The service was great and the food being brought out looked fresh and a good portion size. One to try if you’re in the area. There’s a nice little outdoor seating area for warmer days. We look forward to coming again.
This is an extremely pleasant venue where excellent food is served by attentive staff and which is always under the supervision of the owner. My wife and I used to live nearby and visited this eatery frequently: now living overseas we can only visit when we occasionally visit the UK
Called in for Sunday breakfast , young staff were friendly and attentive but the coffee was awful cheap instant popped in to a cafetiere to make an impression. Breakfast was slow to arrive and with a childlike portion and cheap spread on the toast and inedible beans microwaved ? it was hardly worth the wait only redeeming feature was pleasant staff but will not return
My car was in for its service at the Fiat/Small Cars garage in Lower Upham on what was a wet chilly day 28th). Having brought my Spaniel along for a walk to use the time productively, we found ourselves at the your very welcoming café at around 11:00 we were WET. No problem, I was advised that we needed to seat ourselves in the wood floor area, which is where I would have chosen . Service, from the young dark haired server was polite timely. The offer a doggy treat was a pleasant surprise much appreciated . The bacon fried egg baguette I had hit the spot, as did my cappuccino. Not long after we sat down, a rescue dog in training arrived he too seemed to enjoy his possibly) 1st time out. All in all a great visit one I'm sure to repeat ..
