Description

The Trawlerman Fish Chip Shop in Wigan is widely celebrated as the best chippy around, attracting locals and visitors alike with its exceptional food and friendly service. Located at 6 Woodhouse Drive, just a stone’s throw from the DW Stadium, it’s the go-to spot for authentic Wigan and Lancashire chippy classics. From the famous Wigan Kebab—a hearty meat and potato pie nestled in a buttered bread roll with gravy and peas—to the legendary Smack Barm Pea Wet, featuring a battered potato scallop in a bread roll with mushy pea water, the menu pays tribute to regional favourites that are hard to find elsewhere. The Babbysh’ed, a delicious Steak Kidney Pudding, also earns rave reviews. Customers rave about the generous portions, with fresh fish so large it almost covers two plates, perfectly cooked chips, and the crispy “scraps” (bits of fried batter) that some say you have to try to truly appreciate. The Trawlerman doesn’t just do fish and chips; it offers a vast menu full of pies, puddings, and even a choice of curry sauces, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every craving. What really sets this place apart is the warm, efficient service and the vibrant community spirit. Whether you’re a local heading to a match or a visitor exploring Wigan, this chippy is a must-visit. Guests have travelled from as far away as America and left thoroughly impressed—many promise to return, enchanted by the quality and character of the food. The only downside? It shuts a little too early for some! But for those lucky enough to visit in time, the rich, award-worthy gravy alone is worth the trip. With glowing testimonials and a perfect score from countless customers, The Trawlerman Fish Chip Shop truly lives up to the hype and secures its spot as Wigan’s top choice for traditional fish and chips and much more.

My first visit and have to say best fish and chips I have had for a good time. The fish was lovely and white and cooked to perfection with nice crispy batter. Chips excellent, tasty and dry and served with a good portion of tasty mushy peas. Prices are very reasonable and will have no hesitation in going again, very enjoyable

Best fish and chips ever had, the wife had steak pudding that she thought was delightful. We knew the chips was going to be good before even trying them as they looked delicious as they were serving them. Staff was lovely will definitely be returning.

Classic chip shop, with great friendly staff. Popped in for the Wigan Kebab, and smack barm pea wet, and it was very worth it.
