Was Andres Mendoza at Cedar a mag?
Great restaurant with excellent food. We had a happy hour event there and got to meet the owner and she was lovely. Very hospitable and accomodating for pur event. Staff was super friendly and attentive. We had some amazing cheesecake bites, ribeye skewers, apple tarts, the fries were delicious and all the other food was great. I highly recommend and will definitely be back. View all feedback.
What Gwen B dislikes about Cedar:
My friend and I came to this restaurant for brunch on a Sunday, and we were the only ones there. The waiter was friendly and attentive, but that was the only positive aspect of our meal. I ordered the Crab Cake Benedict, but they were small, frozen, processed crab cakes that did not taste fresh. The hollandaise sauce, which I asked for on the side, was cold and unusually thick, tasting more like mayonnaise. The side salad was not fresh and seemed pre-made and soggy. Overall, aside from the good service from our waiter and the pleasant company of my friend, the experience was disappointing. The meal was overpriced and of poor quality. It was no surprise that we were the only ones there for brunch, and I have no intention of returning.
My colleagues and I had our holiday dinner at Cedar on a Friday evening a few weeks before Christmas. The restaurant is quaint and located down a couple of short flights of stairs. I opted for scallops as an appetizer and bouillabaisse as my main course. While both dishes were tasty, I was hoping for a bit more flavor. The portions were on the smaller side considering the price, but that's to be expected in Washington, DC.
A friend and I decided to try out Cedar for happy hour and we were not disappointed! Located below street level, it was less crowded than most places offering happy hour, even on a Monday. We had the bar all to ourselves with only two other occupied tables. We enjoyed some glasses of wine for $5 each, including a Malbec Proemio from Argentina and a Sauvignon Blanc Hall from Napa. The duck fat fries for $6 were delicious. The service was a bit slow but courteous. The bartender mentioned they will be expanding above ground soon, which we think will bring in more customers. The decor was nice, the music was enjoyable without being too loud, and the seats were comfortable. We will definitely be returning soon!
We had a wonderful team dinner here. The menu was very interesting. You could see things that you have never seen before anywhere else, like boar chops and quail. The vegan menu is so interesting. It 's carefully designed, unlike other places where vegan food items just happen to be vegan . Mussels are amazing. I could dip the sauce with bread. Brie was very good too. For the main course, I ordered stuffed quail and it was very good. Tbh I like it better than Blue Duck Tavern. The pasta with lobster tail was a bit too creamy for my friends. For dessert, espresso creme bulee was incredible! I loved it. The drinks here are good too. They have a couple of Champagne cocktails which taste excellent. Our waitress was absolutely amazing. She was so helpful and nice. She went above and beyond for us a big annoying group lol. The restaurant has a quiet and classy vibe. You feel that it 's more like a restaurant in a classy old hotel. One thing though, I wish the bar menu was available for the tables too for the dinner hours. The bar menu has awesome food items.
While in D.C my sister and I had walked for 10 miles exploring the city. We needed food and needed it fast. My restaurant choices were limited due to the fact that she's pescatarian. This restaurant not only had a great menu for meat eaters like me, but they also had a separate vegetarian/vegan menu! They offered separate appetizers, main courses, and even desserts! Now, the restaurant is on the pricey side, but the food was delicious and well worth it. The dress code seemed to be business casual to semi formal. The really interesting part about this restaurant is that it's located down in the basement. It makes it feel more private and it was a nice quiet spot to enjoy your food. We did notice that up on the street level they were currently Renovating a bar style restaurant to accompany their basement restaurant! We are planning on returning late this year, so we are excited to see how it turned out.
