Fat Jack's - Walterboro
Fat Jack's
Description
Tucked just off the highway, this casual Southern spot is a clean, family-friendly hidden gem with a fish pond that delights kids and wheelchair-accessible dining. Servers offer warm Southern charm and standout dishes like crispy fried shrimp and hearty Philly cheesesteaks, though salads can be overdressed. Inconsistent kitchen execution—overcooked vegetables, overly sweet tea, and occasional doneness issues—tempers otherwise solid service, and management can sometimes feel abrupt. Many travelers prefer it to fast-food chains for a homestyle stop.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a restaurant with "Fat" in its name. I anticipated something more like fast food, but I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem located just off the highway—it's a convenient stop when traveling. The food was delicious, and our waitress brought a wonderful Southern charm that earned her a generous tip from us. If you're on the road, choose this place over McDonald's or Burger King; you'll be very glad you did!
The food is not very flavorful. I ordered vegetables, but they served overcooked beans instead. The tea is overly sweet, and although I requested my meat to be medium rare, they brought it out rare.
The only drawback I can mention is that my Caesar salad was over-dressed, leaving a little puddle at the bottom of the bowl. However, the lettuce was fresh and free of any brown spots. I ordered the fried shrimp and absolutely loved it! The batter was light and crispy. I've dined here twice, and both times the food and service were fantastic! On my first visit, I had the Philly cheese steak sandwich, which was generously filled. Everything was cooked perfectly, with the onions and peppers beautifully caramelized.
