It seems my group of three visited this restaurant on an off night. We waited over an hour for our dinner, and the steak salad was more like ground beef with the ends of romaine lettuce—there wasn't even a whole leaf in the bowl. I wouldn’t return. Maybe lunch is better. The portions are overpriced, and the kitchen is very slow with service that leaves much to be desired.
Charming little spot, but the kitchen is incredibly slow. When we arrived, none of the other diners had received their meals, which should have been a warning sign. We ended up waiting over an hour for a main course steak salad that was quite disappointing. There were no extra sides or anything special about the dish. The steak salad resembled more of ground beef on wilted romaine lettuce rather than a fresh salad. My friend's meal, a small portion of pasta, was underwhelming, and the fish and chips lacked flavor. To make matters worse, our waiter provided poor service and seemed more interested in flirting with some women at the bar than in assisting us or tracking down our missing food. Save yourself the trouble and try a different restaurant.
The Blackboard Cafe is a hidden gem in downtown Wallace. On a weekday afternoon, there was plenty of street parking available, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered the Sirloin steak sandwich with chips, along with a seared Ahi tuna sandwich and soup. The sirloin was grilled to perfection and came with a flavorful spread that was simply delightful. The sweet and savory combination was absolutely amazing. The Ahi tuna was seasoned just right, with the perfect balance of lime and spice, and a generous portion of tuna. After devouring the sandwiches, I moved on to the classic cream of mushroom soup, which was excellent, packed with various types of wild mushrooms and rich in flavor. I also tried a few local beers, including one with Huckleberry flavor, and I found the High Elevation to be my favorite. I’ll definitely keep this charming mining town in mind and plan another trip from Spokane to enjoy the Blackboard Cafe again.
