Was Roy Barber at Lazy Trout a mag?
What a fascinating place! Known as the most haunted hotel in New Zealand, it certainly has its charm. The staff members were a bit scarce, but they were diligent and friendly. The food was exceptional. It’s definitely worth a visit, but it’s important to note that the hotel is in need of a complete refurbishment. This historic building deserves to be restored to its former glory. View all feedback.
What Mark Robinson dislikes about Lazy Trout:
The food is very presentable for what you expect. If you are hungry you're going to want to eat here before you head out. You can even come here for dinner and the service is really quick. There is ample parking and the restrooms are next door. They offer a buffet breakfast as well as a menu. We had a delightful stay at this hotel. While it could benefit from some modernization or a refresh, it has a lot of charm and we truly enjoyed our time there. The location is fantastic, as Waitomo offers many intriguing sites to explore and boasts beautiful scenery with its rolling hills all around.
Staying at this hotel felt like stepping into a time capsule, with its decor and service evoking a bygone era (but thankfully equipped with plenty of power outlets!). Unlike many places that offer retro-style renovations, this hotel retains its original charm, making my experience truly special. Despite its age, everything was impeccably clean. We indulged in the seafood platter at the restaurant, which was both fresh and delicious. The charming retro dining room further enhanced our experience. There are very few hotels like this, so take the opportunity to enjoy it while you can!

Beautiful antique hotel. It is old with a lot of character, yet very clean. The Hotel needs a bit of tender loving care. Overall we were happy with our stay. And we didn't see or hear any ghosts as the hotel is notorious for
I love this hotel. I have stayed many times and love coming back. Yes its tired and outdated a bit but that is all part of the charm. If you expect a lovely old place like this to look like a modern hotel in the middle of Waitomo you are dreaming and this is not for you. Go to Hamilton. If you want to experience a bit of old world charm... you got it here. Love it

While some might find the hotel a bit worn, I appreciated its charm, as it is steeped in history and transports you back in time. The food was absolutely delicious, and the prices were quite reasonable. We dined outside, savoring the peaceful garden view and the gentle evening breezes. The staff were friendly and attentive, making our experience even more enjoyable. This place is a hidden gem, a tranquil escape from the typical tourist restaurants and modern hotels.
The food was surprisingly excellent—fresh and flavorful. Plus, the view was fantastic!
The food was excellent and reasonably priced. I enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant during my stay at the Waitomo Caves Hotel. While the restaurant and hotel could benefit from some updates, the quality of the food and the service were outstanding.

The Haunted Hotel's Restaurant is fantastic! The food and service are both exceptional. Definitely worth a visit!
The food is quite intriguing and certainly more appealing than what you would typically find at an average hotel restaurant.
--- The Manuka smoked kahawai fish cakes are a delight. Each bite offers a perfect balance of smoky flavor and freshness, showcasing the high quality of the fish. The cakes are expertly prepared, crispy on the outside while remaining tender and flavorful on the inside. They are a standout dish that captures the essence of the ingredients. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a delicious and unique culinary creation! --- Let me know if you need any adjustments or additional information!
