There were several incidents where glasses were broken and dishes were dropped, and our orders were mixed up multiple times. We had ordered the vegan version of a soup, and if the chef hadn't come out to tell us, we would have unknowingly eaten a non-vegan version. Despite us mentioning several times that we are animal rights activists and vegans, we were still served the soup with milk on another occasion.
This restaurant has a unique atmosphere with an old-school vibe. The copper jukebox adds a special touch to the ambiance. The kitchen serves very delicious food.
A calm and laid-back restaurant located on the border of Belgium (Fourons) and the Netherlands. The menu is diverse and there is a very welcoming staff that is happy to accommodate guests in any language. Enjoy a relaxed dining experience and bon appétit!
Give the "little of everything" platter a try and you'll be coming back for more.
Finally, a restaurant in this area that offers vegan options! Previously, we had to travel to Maastricht, Liège or Aachen to find a decent vegan meal. Most of the time, we had to settle for vegetarian options, where the cheese would simply be omitted from a salad without a suitable replacement. However, we recently had a pleasant dining experience in our own village at a restaurant that caters to vegans. It is a great asset to have a place like this in the tourist area opposite Voeren. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We enjoyed a delicious jackfruit Bourguignon with a side salad and French fries cooked in vegetable oil. The homemade vegan mayonnaise had a tangy flavor similar to traditional Belgian mayonnaise. Our daughter loved the homemade vegan bitterballs (Dutch meat snack). Café Modern is housed in a charming old school building with a cozy retro interior, a fireplace, and an organ. Dogs are welcome, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal after a day of hiking. Note: If you order a vegetarian burger, they will make it vegan by replacing the cheese with a vegan alternative. Update (September 2020): It appears there are new owners and the only vegan option available is the grilled zucchini dish with pumpkin, fennel, sweet potato, mushrooms, and quinoa.
