Based on recommendations, we visited this restaurant for lunch, and were not disappointed. It is well frequented by local people (always a good sign), the service was warm and friendly and the food extremely good. What LaclaudeL doesn't like about O Transmontano-actividades Hoteleiras Lda:
I asked several times to close the door because it was very windy that evening and our table was right in front of the door. They replied with an absurd excuse like: we can 't close the door because of the Covid ...managing a restaurant is not only a matter of food but also listening to your customers ' needs! A nice cozy friendly place with nice traditional food we ate the codfish wich was realy good! The service was friendly and professional, we were sight seeing in vila real and came accross this restaurante which was very good!
Simple but delicious. We had porc and lamb. Portions were to big for our stomach , could have done with one meat dish. Accompanied with home fried potato chips and salad. Next day, after a long walk we just wanted bread, local ham and cheese and the lady gave us a very nice plate with salade on the side

First, the positives: Restaurante O Transmontano offers one the opportunity to eat the ordinary, day-to-day fare of this part of Portugal within the historic center of Vila Real. You'll most likely be surrounded by young families and others who live here. You needn't spend an arm and a leg in order to eat fairly well. The regional wines are very fairly priced, as are the main dishes. But do note as well that it's not likely that you'll leave raving about the meal. If you come at a busy hour, be prepared for quite a long wait. The cooking is competent, but that's about the best that can be said for it. Neither the outdoor seating area nor the interior of the restaurant offer an especially pleasant ambiance. The service staff are young and appear not to be especially committed to the task. On balance, there's nothing wrong with this restaurant. But they could do more.
