We had seen the high recommendations on TA for this restaurant and happened to walk by it on our stroll to the upper old town of Vaison. The gentleman in there was very nice and was able to confirm a reservation for two of us the next evening. We had a terrific meal of poisson sauvage, a salmon-like fish that was really good paired with a local white wine! The desserts were exceptional and despite being so full, we a... View all feedback.
What Surreyhotelguru doesn't like about Le Bateleur:
This is a small, local restaurant along the river. Despite the guidebook suggesting a river-view terrace, the tables wi5 a fever view are inside. The outside terrace is in a small square on the other side of the road, alongside another restaurant. The food is quite nice but the service was a tad perfunctory. Unfortunately the end of my meal was completely spoiled by a man smoking his pipe on the table behind me (is t... View all feedback.
We have been eating at this restaurant for many years and our last visit was very enjoyable. How the staff look after so many guests so well remains a mystery but they do the job superbly. The Carte de Vin gives a wonderful choice of wines and the burgundy that we ordered was truly delicious. Our meal was good though the choice was limited. This remains a problem with restaurants that do not regularly offer different menus.
We rang just before going into Vaison-la-Romaine and were told they could give us a table on the terrace. The terrace is across the road from the restaurant, quite small. They offer a menu selection with either 2 or 3 courses. We had the 3 course choice, which is 45 euros per person They bring some nibbles to go with the aperitif and an amuse bouche, which was nice. We both enjoyed our fish main course. The food is good, mid price.
This is not a typical tourist ware restaurant. It is seriously good food in the middle of a lovely and popular provencal city. It is a very good way of mixing good food, shopping, culture, art and history. Prices are above average, but the quality of service and eating justifies it. I will certainly return.
We were already a few times in this very nice restaurant. For sure this is one of the best in Vaison la Romaine. Don't expect the common steak with frites menu. On the contrary, the dishes are original, beautiful and very tasty. Price is very moderate for this quality and you can still combine it with very reasonable priced wine. The situation is close to the old roman bridge and if you are lucky and be seated at the window you will enjoy the nice view on the river and the old mediaval part of Vaison.
The young chef created a magnificent dinner in this lovely little restaurant just over the Roman bridge. The service, wine suggestions and chef's menu could not have been better. Don't miss this restaurant when visiting Provence!
