Even my picky daughter, licked her plate clean. This was the best dinner we have had in France, hands down.

It was a sunny day, the location, next to the Châtea... read more It was mid-week and I was taking 2 friends to lunch for what turned out to be a superb culinary experience. It was a sunny day, the location, next to the Château des Bordes, looked promising, but nothing really prepared us to what was to follow once seated at our table. The menu looked good, short, not overcrowded with pompous wording and composed of fresh local products. The 3 course menu dégustation at 30€ looked to good to be true considering that this type of menu is usually pitched around 40 to 50€. So, we bravely went for it, expecting minute portions and lots of fancy side bits that are generally supposed to keep the customer 's eyes happy, but his or her stomach frustrated. But this was not to be the case. The food from starters to desserts was refined, well presented, plentiful; service was attentive and slick; the wine list was short but well thought through and above all unusually well priced. One friend (the chauffeur) was drinking water, my other friend and I had wine by the glass and I 'm almost embarrassed to say that all in all, the bill (service included as it is always the case in France) just managed to reach the 100€ mark. (I must also mention a lunchtime menu at about 15€, for those who wouldn 't want to splash out on their food). Both my friends are locals (and great cooks) and are usually a bit snooty about eating out, but like me, they couldn 't help, driving back to Nevers, raving about our lunch at La Table des Bordes
