Good town centre pub. Choice of beers. Always busy with a good friendly atmosphere Price per person: £1–10 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
From the outside, it’s a charming pub—I even have a lovely watercolor of it hanging in my bar at home—and it’s situated in a fantastic location, which makes it hard to believe it could ever close for good. With outdoor seating available on one of the main pedestrian streets in town, the pub attracts a decent daytime crowd, including those looking for a quick meal. However, during my last visit on a rainy Tuesday night, the atmosphere felt quite lackluster, with only a few despondent patrons inside. There were a couple of older gentlemen glued to the giant TV, watching their bets on horse racing go wrong. Additionally, a pair of teenage sweethearts were busy canoodling to some overly loud music on the jukebox, with Abba playing in the background—it was amusing to see the bartender rolling his eyes at their antics. The strange mix of horse racing and dance music, along with a tacky disco light show, didn’t help the vibe. I shouldn’t be too critical of the young ones making a scene, considering I was a regular there myself from ages 16 to 18. But I’d recommend visiting on a nicer day and taking a seat outside. The pub offers a good selection of beers and the people-watching is quite enjoyable.
The Bricklayers Arms offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the shopping street. Nestled slightly away from the main thoroughfare, complete with its own gated terrace, this charming little pub beckons you in with the sounds of northern icons like Paul Weller playing from its outdoor speakers. Inside, the pub has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, thanks to the new landlords known for their work at The Orange Tree, resulting in a much-improved atmosphere. While the original regulars continue to visit, a new wave of patrons has also emerged, eager to enjoy the cozy booth seating and a delicious menu featuring dishes like baked salmon, hearty pies, baguettes, and soups. It’s a delightful retreat from the corporate chaos happening outside.
