El Mezquite - Tupelo

They have Sopes! It's really hard to find a Mexican restaurant here that makes Sopes. Their tacos are very good also. Their Horchata is okay. (El Agave is better in New Albany Oxford) They have more authentic Mexican food (not Tex-Mex)

I was so excited to see some authentic Mexican food in Tupelo. I will probably give it another try, but my first experience was not great. I ordered a steak burrito with pico de Gallo and guacamole to go, which I thought was a safe choice. I took one bite and it was unbearably spicy. I took a closer look and the burrito was filled with HUGE chunks of jalepeno. After a few more bites my mouth and lips were on fire. I usually like a little spiciness, but I'm pregnant, get really bad heartburn and this was out of control! I opened up the burrito to pick out all the jalepeno and discovered it was full of tiny jalepeno seeds! No wonder it was so bad. Not only was it stuffed full of jalepeno, but they hadn't bothered to remove seeds and pith from the pepper!!! What the heck!? Why did they feel the need to punish a paying customer in such a way? Next time allow the customer to determine the spice level by adding salsa. Pico and guac are traditionaly pretty mild toppings. I will probably give them one more try because I really want this place to be good and stay in business.

It feels much smaller when your inside but the general service and the quality was great I got a small shrimp cocktail, but it was spicy, it was great, but only really sharp for me and the kids plates are actually a great size, so if your kids eat like my a plate feeds them both I would know because I saw them both a plate the tacos amazing but I just skipped meat on Friday, so I did

Great place. Usually not busy. I feel this place is greatly underappreciated. Excellent food and good service. We tried the anaconda burrito for my husband and I to share and it was so much that we had another meal each out of it. Also love that aside from the normal chips and salsa, they have these corn puff things (I forget what they are called) but they are tasty.

We gave El Mezquite another try and I'm happy we did. The service was great and the food was hot and delicious. Give this place a try if you're looking to for a more authentic Mexican selection.
