What oscar goodlet doesn't like about Hungry Hippo:
I had the worst hot chips I've had in years—dry and completely lacking in seasoning, despite requesting chicken salt. The steak burger was just a thin piece of schnitzel topped with an overcooked egg. At $16.50, it felt like a total rip-off. I won't be coming back. Food: 1 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2 View all feedback.
The staff was incredibly friendly, though the prices were a bit high, especially since the chicken was just a frozen patty. However, both the burger and chips were very well cooked and beautifully presented. The chips were crispy and perfectly salted.
The chips were cooked perfectly, and the blue cod was incredibly tender; however, the batter was a bit greasy. The whitebait fritter was enjoyable, though a few more pieces of whitebait would have improved it. The lemon wedge served with the fish was a nice addition. I’ll definitely stop by again when I’m in the area.
We have travelled out to the 'Hungry Hippo ' a few times over the last few years. The food is great. Um, right up there with the best no matter what is served, it is fantastic. The Hoki Fish Burger is simply delicious amongst the rest if the yummy yummy food our family devoured at Tuatapere.
Lovely burgers. Hoki a little greasy but comes as a fillet not a 'shaped ' piece. Chips were crisp not soggy
We ordered blue cod, chips, and donuts. The blue cod and donuts were outstanding. The portion of cod was generous, and the batter was perfectly crispy. The donuts were large and well-prepared. However, the shoe string chips were below average. Our meal was ready in just a few minutes.
