Loved this experience of eating Ethiopian style with our fingers using the beautiful light “bread” to pick up the very tasty, not overly spiced food to eat. The owner was very friendly and informative about the food and his country. The food was delicious and we would definitely return for some more wonderful Ethiopian food. Highly recommend this place. Lots of atmosphere as well View all feedback.
What Tess C doesn't like about Abyssinian Restaurant:
We came with a cudo offer for a mesob banquet with 6 dishes and injeri bread. It's a large venue and very laid back which is lovely. The food when it arrived was a huge serve and with 6 different dishes, it was interesting to work out what the flavours were. We enjoyed the experience but did find the flavours, especially in the beef dish to be quite raw in spice and very hot. The bread is unusual, very sponge like an... View all feedback.
Went on Saturday night and had a so so experience. I dont want to be too harsh as it looks like a family restaurant and I hope they do well but I feel it could be so much better. My advise for what its worth, The lighting is too harsh and could be easily fixed. Dim the room down and give it a warmer feel. EXPLAIN THE FOOD !! We were clearly first timers and got no help with the menu or any explanations at all. We didn't even understand how the food is to be spooned into the bread to be eaten. Had to work it out ourselves. A smile goes a long way. Treat your customers like guests. We felt like a bit of an imposition. Over all the meal was reasonable and certainly it was good value for money. I hope they can work on creating a bit of atmosphere as t the moment its just a bit cold and un inviting.
I really enjoy coming to the Abyssinian. It has had a change of owner , but the food is still excellent . It is also very good value for money . The new owners have freshened the decor
I dined here last night with a group of friends, we had the vegan share plate and WOW! It was so delicious! I can’t wait to go back again! Added bonus there was live music playing while we ate and we were able to BYO wine. Highly recommended!

Our daughter and son-in-law regularly eat Ethiopian food (vegetarian) and invited us to join them at the restaurant they eat at. Unfortunately, it was closed and, instead, we went to the Abyssinian Restaurant on Henley Beach Rd. The friendly staff welcomed us into the restaurant which was filled with enticing aromas and a mix of Anglosaxon and, apparently, African patrons. A banquet (bain-marie style) was on offer for $25/head. There were 7 dishes available: 3 meat-based, 3 vegetarian, 1 boiled rice and 1 raw cabbage/salad dish. In addition a crepe-style bread was also served. Ample quantities were available and we were encouraged to eat as much as we liked. I enjoyed the two meat-based dishes, a split-pea dish, boiled rice and some of the bread. One of the meat dishes had a lot of chilli but all dishes were delicious. I had a couple of serves of each. My wife, daughter and son-in-law also enjoyed a lentil-based (reddish coloured) dish that had a little chili in it. I did not have that dish. They also went back for seconds and had another vegetable-based dish that I did not have. It was a nice evening. We enjoyed the food, the friendly service from the staff and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the following morning my wife, daughter and son-in-law all woke up ill with upset stomaches and diarrhoea. My wife was quite ill and is only starting to feel a little better 48 hours later. I managed to escape the malaise. Given our experience, we cannot recommend the restaurant and would not visit there again. We dined at the restaurant on Saturday, July 13th 2019.
