Decent AYCE sushi. $21.99 at lunch (doesn't include: eel, sweet shrimp, oysters). Sushi (nigiri) selection isn't bad, the fish was fresh (had salmon, albacore, yellowtail and scallop). I read the reviews on Kai before I decided to experience it myself and review it. First off... a Yelp Check In gets you a free soda (with unlimited refills) or a free sake... so be sure to cash in on that. I was wary of the comments about the service here, with statements of it being slow. I 'd agree with those points. We were one of two tables on a weekday night and the service was indeed a tad slow given the circumstances, in terms of proactively coming to take orders and hustling to get food out. It wasn 't detrimental to the dining experience however. Everything came out and we were continually fed food, as ordered. The whole 3 rounds for AYCE sounded like there was a limitation and it wasn 't true AYCE... That 's FALSE... this is a TRUE All-You Can Eat restaurant without any limitations. The 3 rounds are represented on the ordering sheet of paper, and guess what happens when you finish the 3rd round... ??? ...you get another set of sheets of paper to order more. So, fret not, there are not limits or restrictions to that degree. I think the only limitations to avoid waste and the whole your eyes are bigger than your stomach scenario is that each round you order has a limit to 5 pieces of sushi, 3 side appetizer entrees and 2 extravagant rolls, PER PERSON (so if you have 4 people dining together that 's now x 4, so it would be 20 pieces of sushi, etc. per table brought out per order. That is both fair and reasonable. Once they master the art of balancing quick service, you 'll probably never hear a complaint about getting food. The service is only slow in getting the order forms and coming back to take orders, once the order is placed the food comes out fairly fast. Sushi is easy to make, there 's no cooking involved. I think there might be some MSG or higher sodium on some of the appetizers as we both felt a tad dehydrated after dinner at night. So, keep hydrated and brush your tongue when you get home if that 's a concern. The overall quality of food is A-OKAY and good, nothing stellar per se, but better than the sushi at those Asian Combo AYCE Buffets that 's sitting out there. I 'd say, if you 're an LA So-Cal fan of AYCE Sushi, that both Aburi (in Long Beach) and Midori (in The Valley) offer better sushi than Kai, but Kai is still good and convenient for South Bay Beach Cities residents. It 's located next to GEN Korean BBQ which is also AYCE. Kai offers non-sushi items which makes it a good place for kids and everyone who doesn 't like raw fish. They don 't have Tofu 'tho, so if you 're vegan or vegetarian you may want to check out the menu first. The chicken and beef are solid and good staples. Out of all of the sushi, the salmon was the most fresh and moist looking and tasting. The yelowtail, albacore, and tuna were a bit matte looking but still tasted good, just no moist tender glistening luster to the fish slices. The eel seemed a bit dry too. Parking is easy here, it 's in a big outdoor shopping complex that features Home Depot and Von 's Supermarket, and is near Sam 's Club too. I do think there 's room for improvements, but is good enough to continue to come back to and recommend hoping it gets better and better and doesn 't go the opposite direction. The staff are friendly and nice, so I 'm sure their hearts and intentions are in the right A-For-Effort spirit and just needs to execute with greater speed and prioritization. It 's about $26 per person for AYCE for Dinner, plus after tax,and then add tip it adds up, so budget about $40 or so per person, or more if you also add a drink.
So out of the blue our group wanted to try an AYCE (All You Can Eat) sushi restaurant and someone recommended Kai Sushi due to its close proximity to the workplace. Kai Sushi is located right next to Gen Korean BBQ in Torrance and there are plenty of parking spaces. Lunch AYCE is $21.99 per person and dinner AYCE is $25.99 per person. Bluefin tuna, halibut, fatty tuna, and oyster are only available for dinner AYCE (limited to one piece per person). Each round is limited to 5 sushi orders, 2 roll orders, and 3 kitchen orders. The restaurant will charge you $2 per sushi roll when you leave a total of more than 5 pieces. Overall service was a okay. Tuna Sushi (2 pieces): Tasted more fishy than usual and not as good as I thought. Salmon Sushi (2 pieces): Not too bad and it was definitely better than tuna sushi. #6 Spicy Tuna Roll: Spiciness level was just right. Bluefin Tuna Halibut Fatty Tuna (1 piece each person): These special pieces were not exactly amazing. Both bluefin tuna and fatty tuna were somewhat fishy. Fresh Water Eel (2 pieces): Slightly too much soy sauce, but otherwise eel was great. Oyster (1 piece each person): It had a slightly spicy kick and tasted a okay. I ended up eating everyone else's oysters since most people in this group didn't like oysters. #30 Eel Avocado Hand Roll: You really can't go wrong with this eel and avocado combination. #55 Calamari Roll (in: crabmeat, avocado, cucumber out: calamari): I liked the spicy mayo, but calamari was pretty mediocre. #67 Baked Salmon Roll (in: avocado, crabmeat, cucumber out: baked salmon): Two words heavy sauces. Miso soup: A bit too salty for my taste Complimentary green tea ice cream: Our group almost forgot about this dessert. Nothing to complain about it was good! I agree with my fellow Yelper Chow time W. below many nigiri tasted fishy and seafood quality wasn't exactly top notch. Personally the food quality didn't really justify the $25.99 AYCE dinner experience. P.S. I did get a stomach flu 36 hours later, but nobody else in my group got sick.
I am a sushi enthusiast so I tend to be bias on the topic of sushi. quality , freshness, color of the fish and taste. To me anything over 3 stars is worth trying and give yourself a chance to judge for your self.... Here is the list of reason why I rated 3 stars 1) Quality of the Food: The raw fish have great color, tastes norm and the texture of the fish is good. For most all you can eat sushi usually added salt to the fish to help keep the fish last longer but it's trading off with the taste of the fish. This sushi restaurant didn't do that at all. And I appreciated it. 2) Price: For the quality of the food and the price is estimated $30 to $40 for all you can eat is a very good price. 3) Decor: It was more modern decoration and give a little Asian fusion look for the restaurant. Which is ok. But what is important is the cleanest and organized. 4) Server: For my experience , I have a great service for my time at the restaurant. Remember all the reader and customer, to get a great service first you have to be a great customer... food for thoughts 5) Location: awesome location, on the cross intersection and located in a plaza with many parking space... I would go back again when I am in Long Beach in the future... go give it a try and be a foodie. Let me know your experience and give me your comments
Overall worth the price. We went in for the lunch special which comes out to $24 with tax per person. Sushi is just alright, nothing special. The rolls are what makes it worth. The crunchy roll, Hawaiian rolls, salmon rolls, especially baked, are absolutely delicious. The deep fried rolls are also delicious. Try the spicy tuna rolls and even the nuclear roll is delicious (not too spicy)
