Recently the price of the hot and sour soup with seafood was raised from $3.50 to $5.50. But it is worth the price. A recent menu change increased most prices. Not unexpected because of the drastic price increases restaurants have endured this year for meat, especially beef prices. Maple Yip is an old style Cantonese style restaurant where classic old school style food is the rule and presentation takes second place... View all feedback.
What Duncan Cartwright doesn't like about Maple Yip Seafood Restaurant:
Not a bad place for a lunch .. we didn't order much of the seafood dishes but beef based were tasty ... it's better if somebody in the company speaks Cantonese... View all feedback.
$45 for a medium winter melon soup is on the high side for me. Should be around $30. Their chicken stuffed with sticky rice was also too expensive. It's just a chicken with some sticky rice stuffed in it. The chicken skin was crispy though. We had some other other dishes and they were ok.The Braised duck in plum sauce was not a good dish. Give that dish 1.5 stars and I love duck!
This was our 2nd stop on a day we explored the Scarborough area. After filling ourselves with dimsum at Dragon Dynasty, we took a 2 hour break and came here around 3 pm. We were the only customers. Yay!The lady taking our order (presumably the owner), answered my wife's many questions. They talked at length. Since it was all in Mandarin, I have no idea what was said but at the end of it all we ended up with:Live Lobster with ginger and scallion sauce - Pretty good but slightly overcooked and not a lot of flavor. 3.5/5Steamed Fish with Ginger and Scallion sauce (bass) - Cooked to perfection. The bass was almost melting in my mouth. Tasted extremely fresh and light. 5/5Pork with Preserved Vegetable (Mei Cai Kou Rou) - The missus said she used to have this growing up so we decided to get this. The pork belly actually got pretty lean in the cooking process (though it didn't take anything away from the dish) and the preserved mustard greens had a good balance of salty and sweet. 4/5Crispy Fried Chicken(half order) - Another favorite of mine at this place. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well cooked the chicken was. Even the white meat was enjoyable because it wasn't dry. The best part was the perfectly crispy skin. It was delicious and not oily at all. 4.5/5Sauteed Water Spinach with Garlic- Lightly sauteed, not a crazy amount of oil and garlicy to the extreme. 4/5That was enough between the 4 of us. If not for the dimsum earlier, I think we probably would've stuffed ourselves with more food. The damage was a reasonable $30 per person all in. I have no idea when I'll go back to Scarborough next but this was a meal that I won't soon forget.
This is a long review because it summarizes 2 visits I had in the last 2 weeks. I wanted to find a Chinese seafood restaurant to try with 7 friends and decided on Maple Yip because of all the positive reviews on TripAdvisor and other review sites. We made 7:30 reservations for a Friday night and we were promptly seated when we arrived. Based on the reviews, we had pre-ordered the Winter Melon Soup ($45) and Chicken Stuffed With Rice ($42). The waitress was friendly and when we told her we wanted seafood she gave us some suggestions on the fresh seafood they had. We decided on live Vancouver Crab With Ginger & Onion ($16/lb), steamed fresh Red Snapper ($23/lb), fresh Scallop With Garlic & Vermicelli ($9 each), Clams In Black Bean Sauce, and 2 veggie dishes. The seafood was fresh, the cooking method was perfect, and the taste was authentic Cantonese style - exactly what we were looking for. The bill was $461 (with tax & tip already included). This was a bit expensive however the waitress had told us the prices at the time of ordering and we didn't feel pressured to go with her recommendations. We live in an area that has hundreds of Chinese restaurants within a 20 minute drive and there haven't been any that I've tried in recent memory that I've wanted to recommend to my family until this one. So a week later I made another reservation for 7:30 on a Saturday night for my family. There were 18 of us so we had a table of 10 and a table of 8 - once again I pre-ordered 2 Winter Melon Soups, a Chicken Stuffed With Rice, and a "Eight Treasured Braised Duck" ($48) which is also one of their specialities that must be pre-ordered.On this Saturday night we had to wait 20 minutes before we were seated but the staff were very apologetic and we were prepared that there may be wait. This evening's dinner we ordered 2 Black Pepper Tenderloin, 2 Sweet & Sour Pork, 2 Scallop In Taro Birds Nest, Braised Pork Belly With Preserved Vegetables, a Cantonese Chow Mein, and a tofu/veggie dish. The bill was $387 (tax & tip already included). Reasonable for the size of our party and the amount of food we ordered. My family was happy with the recommendation and were generally pleased with the quality and taste of the food, the service and the prices - too bad we don't live in the area otherwise it would become our "go-to" restaurant. This restaurant reminds me of the Cantonese style restaurants in Toronto Chinatown (Spadina/Dundas) in the 80's before they started migrating to Scarborough & Markham and before the "fancier" Chinese restaurants of the last 10-15 years. If you don't mind the tables close together, waiting a bit even with a reservation, and the old-school décor (or lack of), and just want some good Chinese food definitely give this place a try. Here's a tip: Opt for the 7:00 or 7:30 reservation even though you may not get your table on time. The early reservations get "rushed" out even if you want to sit and chat or are slow eaters because the parties have arrived for the next reservation.
They have the best food in the area. However the service is kind of slow and not very good. They have both dining in and take out but the take out portions are smaller or it just seems smaller to me.
After two decades hidden away in an obscure strip plaza at the corner of Sheppard and Midland. This award winning ' hole-in-the-wall ' Cantonese wok-hay eatery still churn out some of the best tasting and best value Cantonese dishes in the GTA. Known for its perfectly executed Cantonese style steamed whole fish. One could kick it up an exotic notches by pre-ordering a Floridian Spotted Coral Garoupa. A rare and most enjoyable treat!Always packed, even on a week day, advanced reservation is a must. However, still be prepared for a wait!
