The Upper Cocks - Torfaen
The Upper Cocks
Description
In a blend of experiences, this restaurant offers a mixed bag of dining. While some patrons praise the generous portions, delicious flavors, and attentive staff, others criticize the shabby decor and subpar service. Complaints include long waits for food, disorganization, and an unwelcoming atmosphere, particularly during quiz nights. Conversely, those who opt for the Christmas menu have reported satisfaction with the festive offerings. Overall, while the restaurant shows potential with hearty meals and friendly service, it struggles with consistency, making it a gamble for diners seeking a reliable pub experience. Consider visiting at off-peak times for a better chance at a pleasant meal.

My family and I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. An hour into our meal, a waitress informed us that they needed the table back, despite us having ordered dessert. She seemed unaware of our order due to poor communication among the staff. The waitress then proceeded to gossip with her colleagues, making faces and saying unkind words about us. The lack of professionalism was shocking. Additionally, we were asked three times in five minutes by different staff members if we were ready to order dessert, highlighting the poor communication within the team. The general demeanor of the staff was unfriendly and disinterested. I would not recommend this restaurant.
We chose in advance from the Christmas menu and it did not disappoint. I had a haloumi and orange salad followed by turkey dinner. There was plenty of everything, with a dish of fresh vegetables and the most delicious pickled red cabbage. As part of the group package we had a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling wine. Some of our party had a lovely raspberry meringue dessert. Altogether a lovely meal served by friendly, helpful staff.
During the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme, I really felt for Jackie, her daughter and their team. They were rushing around to the point of exhaustion, but the superb standard of food and service remained. The food has a home cooked feel to it, is always served piping hot and fresh. It tastes amazing and portions are great too. The menu is varied, desserts are phenomenal; personal favourite is the aero cheesecake and the beef Sunday roast is by far the best around.I’ve not Long returned from holiday, and I couldn’t wait for a Sunday lunch and cheesecake from the Cocks. We’ve tried most things from the menu and cannot fault anything. Decor is tasteful and has a homely, country pub ambience. Great for couples, families and friends alike. Definitely the best place to eat in Cwmbran!
Visited here on Sunday, hadn't booked, it was on a whim after walking the reservoir too long. Place was lovely and staff very lovely too and helpful too. No seating left inside but able to eat outside which was cold but it was late and my 2 year old, us and the dog were starving. Staff couldn't have been more helpful even though we'd put them out and on the spot. Food was delicious and lots. If it wasn't for the rain coming in we'd of had pudding at stayed longer. Will definitely be back when we visit again couldn't recommend or rate this place enough. Thank you to the lady that really helped us out she's a star xx
