As a German with high standards for bread, I can say that Schomaker's rye bread is top-notch. The crust is delicious and it stays fresh for days. My only suggestion would be for them to cover the shelves to protect the bread from being left out in the open.
The bakery sells really good organic German bread as you would find it in Germany, too! Some products contain Japanese ingredients such as azuki beans. The bread is vegan but they sell some additional vegetarian organic products (German brands). The owner is very nice and answered all my questions. He speaks German and English.
I am German and kind when it comes to brot. schomaker roggenbrot has a beautiful chest and remains fresh even days after buying. I wish they would put a few leaves over the regale, so this brot is not just sitting in the open.
It's great to find some delicious and filling bread in Japan at affordable prices. Make sure to go early to have a variety of options to choose from! I visited around 3pm on a Saturday and there wasn't much left, but managed to get some walnut olive bread. The owner was very helpful in letting me know which breads were vegan and confirmed that none of them contained egg, butter, or milk. Some breads did have cheese in them. I inquired about honey in my bread and he assured me that there was no honey, most likely true for the rest of the bread as well.
